MADISON, Wis. – There's nothing like a doubleheader. Play with all heart in the first contest to turn around and do it all again with less than two hours in between. The Badgers did just that on Saturday and came out victorious in each match. Just three hours after dispatching DePaul, 6-1, Wisconsin completed the sweep with a 6-1 win over Omaha.
The Badgers came out of the gates fast in doubles. The theme might stick around again this year, as the Badgers posted a dominant 23-3 record in doubles a season ago.
Junior
Osgar O'Hoisin and sophomore
Daniel Soyfer set the precedent with a 6-3 win at the No. 2 spot. Moments later, the No. 1 senior tandem
Josef Dodridge and
Chema Carranza tallied a 6-2 win to claim the doubles point.
Freshman
Robert Krill grabbed his first collegiate win in impressive fashion. The Elm Grove, Wisconsin, native, burned through the match with a 6-0, 6-1 straight-set win over Omaha's Luke Moorhead. It was all Wisconsin from there, as the Cardinal and White snagged the next three singles matches to clinch the dual.
Westerman's Wing
Head coach Danny Westerman
"DePaul was a very good team. They beat Purdue last weekend and Purdue beat us last year. We knew we had to make sure we were sharp. I was really pleased with the way we came out against DePaul in doubles – I felt like it carried over to singles. It certainly looked like an early match for both us and DePaul but I think we handled each situation very well."
"Omaha is much improved. They came out strong. It was a long day with a doubleheader, but I thought we played well throughout the day. There's definitely some homework after this one but we'll get better."
Up Next: Wisconsin heads to Stillwater, Oklahoma for an action-packed weekend of tennis. The Badgers will face a full docket in No. 14 Mississippi State and then either No. 15 Oklahoma State or Kentucky. Action will start Saturday at 9 a.m. (CT) against MSU.
