MADISON, Wis. – After falling to two ranked opponents last week, the eighth-ranked Wisconsin volleyball team gets a crack at another pair of worthy opponents this weekend when No. 12 Purdue and Indiana visit the UW Field House. Friday's match against the Boilermakers and Saturday's match against the Hoosiers both begin at 7 p.m.
Â
1. TIONNA NIGHT: Saturday's match will feature a celebration of Wisconsin's lone senior,
Tionna Williams. The Fort Wayne, Indiana, native is a two-time AVCA honorable mention All-American and earned third-team All-America honors as a sophomore. Williams has played in all but two matches during her career at Wisconsin. The Badgers will also honor senior manager
Amber MacDonald, who played three years with the team before being forced to retire due to injury.
Â
2. DANA THE DOMINATOR: Middle blocker
Dana Rettke earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors for the second time this season after setting a school record with 30 kills against Minnesota last week. The sophomore was the third Big Ten athlete to record 30 kills in a match this season and the only one to do so in four sets. Rettke also tallied her third career double-double against Michigan with 17 kills and 10 blocks.
Â
3. PERSISTENCE IN THE POLLS: Wisconsin has been ranked in the AVCA Top 25 for 71 straight weeks. This week UW fell three spots to eighth in the AVCA coaches poll and also fell one spot to seventh in the NCAA RPI, but moved up one spot to claim the fourth-toughest strength of schedule so far this season.
Â
4. STEADY EDDIE: Junior
Tiffany Clark has recorded double-figure digs 10 matches in a row, averaging 5.15 digs per set over that 10-game stretch. The 5-foot-11 libero is 45 digs away from 1,000 career saves.
Â
5. SCOUTING PURDUE: The Boilermakers are 21-4 overall and 10-4 in the Big Ten this season. They come into Madison winning their last seven-straight matches, including a five-set victory over No.4 Penn State at the end of October. The Badgers beat Purdue earlier this season on the road via a three-set sweep. Redshirt senior middle blocker Sherridan Atkinson leads her team with 4.05 kills per set and also adds 0.31 aces and 1.26 digs per set.
Â
SCOUTING INDIANA: The Hoosiers, under new head coach Steve Aird, are 15-10 overall and 6-8 in conference play. Last week, Indiana shocked No. 14 Michigan, upsetting them 3-1. They almost topped No. 13 Purdue later in the week, but the Boilermakers prevailed in five sets. Breana Edwards and Deyshia Lofton are the heart and soul of the Hoosier offense, averaging 2.93 and 3.32 kills per set, respectively. Indiana ranks third in the Big Ten with 2.68 blocks per set.
