Wisconsin earns state bragging rights with win over Marquette

MADISON, Wis.  Wisconsin (5-4) bounced back nicely on Thursday night at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium against Marquette (5-2) with a 6-1 win.

The match could have broken a much different way without the boost Wisconsin got in doubles. Senior Josef Dodridge and junior Osgar O'Hoisin claimed a swift 6-3 win over Marquette's Alvaro Verdu and Brett Meyers. After Senior Chema Carranza and sophomore Chase Colton dropped their match at the No. 2 spot 6-4, the doubles was all tied up at 1-1.

Senior Lamar Remy and sophomore Daniel Soyfer displayed their clutch gene in a testing match against Luke Smrek and Scott Christian. The two Badgers were up 5-4 but Marquette fought back against two match points and leveled the score 6-6. It was a bout of fantastic play from the two Badgers that got them the 7-6 win with a hard-fought 7-5 tiebreak win.

The Badgers cruised through the singles category. The Cardinal and White won five of six matches in straight sets to claim the dual.

Westerman's Wing: "I think Marquette played well in doubles. I just thought they were really going for it and it almost paid off for them. We hung in there and got it done though. I thought we were a little more ourselves tonight after doubles. That's what I'm looking for, for us to be us."

"I'm looking for the guys to do the basics well this weekend. If you can do the basics well, the rest will come. I want them to play with emotion, play together, and to continue to compete. I was very pleased with tonight. Saturday we will be ready to go."
