LINCOLN, Neb. – Wisconsin (9-6, 1-1 B1G) earned a huge win on Saturday afternoon over Nebraska (9-4, 0-1 B1G) to claim its first conference win and first road win of the season. The Badgers fought tooth-and-nail to a 4-3 decision over the Cornhuskers.
With the St. Patrick's Day match knotted at 3-3, it was only fitting that all eyes were on Wisconsin's Irishman, junior
Osgar O'Hoisin.
The Dublin, Ireland, native claimed a match-winning victory over William Grattan-Smith, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3.
"I was very proud of Osgar with the way he closed out the dual," head coach
Danny Westerman said. "He struggled to start the year, so this makes me glad to see that he is finally starting to get rewarded with back-to-back match clinching wins."
Â
Doubles was as doubles usually is. The No. 4 ranked tandem in the nation, seniors
Chema Carranza and
Josef Dodridge, buzz sawed Nebraska's pair Linus Erhart and Toby Boyer, 6-1.Â
Â
It took sophomore
Daniel Soyfer and O'Hoisin just a little longer to close the deal, claiming a hard-fought win over Chris Dean and Dylan Berdnarczyk, 7-5, to clinch the point heading into the singles play.
Â
A healthy
Lamar Remy was sorely missed in the opening matches of the spring season. But the senior captain seemed to be back and better than ever in the match Saturday, dismantling Nebraska's Berdnarczyk in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.
Â
Senior
Chema Carranza also picked up a point for UW with a character-building win over Micah Klousia, 7-5, 7-6.
Â
Westerman's Wing: "Our guys showed real toughness today. I can't say we played extremely well, but in part that is credited to Nebraska for competing well. We dug in and found a way to win on a few courts."
Â
"Osgar had so many opportunities to pull away in the second set but he never let that affect his level of play. He just kept in the moment and looked forward to the opportunity that came with the third set. His level of play stayed high throughout that set and I was happy he could clinch it for us. He works so hard every day."
Â
Up Next:Â Wisconsin heads back home next Sunday for another Big Ten matchup against Iowa. The match is set for 2:30 p.m. (CT) at the Nielsen Stadium. Admission to the match is free.Â
