MADISON, Wis. – Facing the No. 2 team in the nation, the Badgers knew they'd be in for a monumental challenge Sunday at Nielsen Tennis Stadium. In the end, the task was too tough as Wisconsin (11-7, 3-2) lost at home for the first time this season, falling 6-1 to Ohio State (18-2, 5-0).
"They're a very good team and I think it just took a little too long for us to settle in," head coach
Danny Westerman said. "We competed really hard like we always do, but about an hour into the match we started coming back. It just took a little too long on a few courts."
Junior
Osgar O'Hoisin provided the lone win for Wisconsin, knocking off the nation's 42nd-ranked player Kyle Seelig. O'Hoisin rallied from a first-set loss to claim the highest-ranked victory of his career, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
The Badgers nearly pulled off wins on courts 3 and 6 as sophomore
Daniel Soyfer and freshman
Robert Krill fought into a third-set tie-breaker. Soyfer ultimately fell, 6-7 (1-7), 6-3, 1-0 (11-9), to No. 78 John McNally. Krill was out-lasted by OSU's Martin Joyce, 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 1-0 (10-4).
Wisconsin dropped the doubles point for just the third time in 18 matches this season as Ohio State grabbed a 6-4 victory at No. 2 and a 6-1 win at No. 3. UW's 5th-ranked duo of Carranza and Dodridge was squared at 4-4 with Joyce and JJ Wolf when the matched was ended early.
"Our doubles point might be our best point of the seven out there and Ohio State took that from us," Westerman added. "They earned it. We weren't in a three-all match, but also we weren't that far. So that's something we can take away from this.
"We have to learn every time we're on the court, wins and losses. The guys realize that we were in a few of those matches near the end. We're playing our best tennis of the year right now so it won't be hard to get them going. I'm sure they're down today, but come practice on Tuesday and our heads will be up and ready to work again."
The Badgers hit the road next weekend for a pair of matches in the state of Indiana. UW will face Purdue on Saturday, April 7 at 11 a.m. (CT) and Indiana on Sunday, April 8 at 11 a.m. (CT).Â
