MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin celebrated the illustrious careers of four seniors on Sunday:
Chema Carranza,
Lamar Remy,
Josef Dodridge and
Darius Mackenzie. Their time at UW was largely synonymous with the program's recent success in the last few years. On Sunday, they left Nielsen on a high note, beating Michigan State, 6-1.
Dodridge was the first Badger to punch his ticket on Sunday. The Bournemouth, England, native won in straight sets over Josh Mukherjee, 6-2, 6-0, to give the Badgers its first singles point of the day. Shortly thereafter, junior
Osgar O'Hoisin stampeded to a two-set win over Michigan State's Davis Wong, 6-3, 6-4.
It was only right that Carranza would be the one to clinch the dual match for the Cardinal and White. In front his mother and father who were visiting from Spain, Carranza eked out a first set before turning on the jets in the second frame to win easily, 7-6, 6-3, over Jasper Koenen.
The Badgers also got back on the right track in the doubles category with a win over the Spartans.
O'Hoisin and sophomore
Daniel Soyfer battled back from down a break to secure their match 7-5 on court two. Sophomore
Chase Colton, alongside senior Remy, were able to put the finishing touch on their match to secure the team doubles point. The pair topped MSU's Michael Dube and John Carlin, 6-4.
Westerman's Wing: "I was very glad we were able to overcome some of the emotions involved in a day like today. We had a heavily mental match on Friday, when we played great but didn't quite get the result we wanted. You never know if that is going to linger – especially when you combine that with senior day emotions. I felt like it took a little bit of time to get going and then it started to go our way."
"The seniors have really helped develop the culture that we have right now. They have been the core of our team since even their sophomore year – when I started coaching them. It has been a work in progress every day for our program but they have really come to the table to continue to work. Our program is in a much better place because of the four seniors. It is sad to see them go but also exciting for the future that they have laid the ground work for."
Up Next: Wisconsin closes out the season on the road with two Big Ten matches. The Badgers will face No. 6 Illinois on Friday and Northwestern on Sunday.
