Badgers advance in Big Ten Tourney

Wisconsin claims 4-1 win over Nebraska to move to quarterfinals

IOWA CITY, Iowa – A month ago the Badgers squeaked out a 4-3 win at Nebraska. Thursday's rematch in the first round of the 2018 Big Ten Tournament was far less dramatic as Wisconsin notched a 4-1 win over the Cornhuskers.

With the victory, the sixth-seeded Badgers (14-11, 5-6) advanced to Friday's quarterfinals where No. 3 seeded Michigan awaits. First serve is set for 2 p.m. (CT) at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex in Iowa City, Iowa.

"Today went great," head coach Danny Westerman said. "It was close matches everywhere and we were fortunate to get that doubles point which was huge and I thought that carried over to singles nicely. Outdoor tennis is a grind, but I was pleased with the guys' competitiveness today."

Wisconsin took the early lead Thursday, grabbing the doubles point by securing wins from seniors Chema Carranza and Josef Dodridge at the top of the lineup and the duo of sophomore Daniel Soyfer and junior Osgar O'Hoisin at the No. 2 spot.

The momentum carried over into singles action. After a few tight opening sets, the Badgers stepped on the gas and pulled away. Soyfer, who was named first-team All-Big Ten earlier in the day, posted a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 win over Toby Boyer at No. 1 singles. At No. 5 singles, O'Hoisin made quick work of Nebraska's Isaac Nortey, 6-3, 6-1 and freshman Robert Krill out-lasted Rok Krizaj, 7-6 (7-4), 6-0, on court six.

"Tomorrow is going to be a really tough match against Michigan," Westerman added. "We're really looking forward to it. We had a very tight match a few weeks ago in Madison. I'm sure they're going to make a few adjustments and we need to make a few adjustments and we definitely need it to keep our season alive. We'll be excited and ready to go."
