Wisconsin fights hard in loss to No. 1 Penn State

Badgers score most points of any PSU opponent in loss at Rec Hall

UNIVERSITY PARK, Penn. – Before today's dual began, head coach Chris Bono told his team that all he was looking for was that every single guy came out on the mat and fought against top-ranked Penn State, and it's safe to say Bono got what he was looking for.

No. 10 Wisconsin (6-3, 1-3 B1G) lost 24-13 to No. 1 Penn State (6-0. 2-0 B1G), but scored the most points of any Penn State opponent on the season and won four of 10 matches, including two upsets over top-10 opponents. The dual was filled with high-tempo matches that provided wrestling fans with plenty of enjoyment on the day.

As has been the pattern this season, No. 16 sophomore Connor Brown got the Badgers started off right at 125 pounds, taking an 18-9 major decision over Devin Schnupp in a match that saw six reversals in the third period split amongst the two wrestlers.

Penn State tied the dual in the next match at 133 pounds, as No. 14 Roman Bravo-Young secured a 12-4 major decision over Wisconsin's senior Jens Lantz.

The highlights of the dual came for Wisconsin in the next two matches. At 141 pounds, UW's No. 16 junior Tristan Moran faced No. 4 Nick Lee of Penn State. The match was close from start to finish. Moran trailed 8-6 in the third with riding time in Nick Lee's favor, but an escape and takedown for Moran sent the match into overtime, where he eventually scored a takedown to take the 12-10 decision over Lee.

Next up for Wisconsin was No. 13 junior Cole Martin against No. 10 Brady Berge. With Martin trailing 7-6 with under one minute left in the third, he scored a takedown against Berge and held on for the remainder of the match to earn an 8-7 decision.

Penn State cut the deficit to one when No. 1 Bo Nickal won via tech fall over UW freshman Devin Bahr at 157 pounds, but Wisconsin's No. 3 Evan Wick extended the Badgers lead with a 6-1 decision over Mason Manville at 165 pounds.

However, Penn State would get the lead back at 174 pounds and never relinquish it for the rest of the dual. No. 1 Mark Hall of PSU defeated sophomore Patrick Spray by a 24-5 tech fall. At 184 pounds, UW junior Mason Reinhardt dropped a 5-0 decision to No. 7 Shakur Rasheed, followed by UW sophomore Beau Breske losing a 14-4 major decision to No. 1 Bo Nickal. In the final match of the day, No. 9 freshman Trent Hillger of UW lost to No. 4 Anthony Cassar by a 11-5 decision.

Next up, Wisconsin returns to the UW Field House for the first time since Nov. 18 for another Big Ten dual with Northwestern (2-4, 0-1 B1G).

On the performance
"Very proud of the team. We are still coming home from the road trip 0-2 so it's disappointing that we didn't get a win, but I'm proud of our guys in spite of that. Really liked the effort again in this one. Tristan Moran and Cole Martin with two huge wins against highly ranked opponents, and it just goes to show that our training and our philosophy are all starting to come together and I'm excited for the next two months to get ready for the Big Ten tournament. I can't be more proud of the effort in a hostile environment against the No. 1 team in the country, and we'll get back to work on Monday."
