Wisconsin takes on Green Bay and Oregon
MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin looks to continue its stellar start to the spring season on Thursday night at 5:30 p.m. (CT) when the Badgers take on Green Bay at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium. The Badgers are back in action against Oregon on Sunday for a 11:00 a.m. match also played at Nielsen.
1. Westerman's wing: Head coach Danny Westerman previews the Badgers' weekend ahead:
"Another great opportunity for our team to get better this week with two more home matches. Green Bay always plays hard, so we are focused on them right now for our match on Thursday.
We host an Oregon team this Sunday that has, in the last few years, really turned themselves into a top Pac 12 contender and consistent NCAA qualifier. We will need to take another step forward this week. We will definitely need to be ready to go for both teams.
Our guys are extremely excited to go out and compete again after having seven days away from competition."
2. Scouting Green Bay: Green Bay is off to a bit of a slow start in the spring of 2019. The Phoenix post a 1-5 overall record, with their only recorded win coming against Concordia by a score of 7-0. Green Bay faced some familiar competition to the Cardinal and White squad, losing to Purdue and Minnesota prior to their lone win.
Wisconsin posted a 4-0 win over the Phoenix a season ago. The Badgers hold a 9-1 record over UW-Green Bay in school history, all of which have come at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
3. Scouting Oregon: While Green Bay has struggled to start the year, Oregon is on an absolute tear to start the new year. The Ducks, who are receiving votes in the ITA Rankings, boast a 9-1 overall record in the spring, including wins against top-tier teams Minnesota, Louisville, and San Diego. The Ducks single loss on the year comes against perennial powerhouse and then-No. 10 Stanford by a 4-0 decision.
The Badgers have faced the Ducks once in school history, winning the match at home. Wisconsin looks to make it two-straight wins over Oregon with a win on Sunday.
4. Doubles Demons: In head coach Danny Westerman's tenure, the doubles point has been paramount. In practice and in matches, Westerman strives to culminate the collective team mindset towards winning the first tally of a dual match. That trend continues into the 2019 season, as the Badgers post an unbeaten 6-0 record in team doubles on the year.
