Bitter border battle

Wisconsin falls just shy of upset in 4-3 loss to No. 16 Minnesota

Box Score MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's tennis team wasn't expected to hang around with a No. 16 Minnesota team that has been dominant in the 2019 season. But Wisconsin did much more than hang around, as the Badgers (7-4, 1-1 B1G) came an inch away from a huge upset in a 4-3 loss on Sunday afternoon.

Sophomore Robert Krill was the key Badger able to even the match at 3-3 after German's, sophomore Jesper Freimuth and sophomore Lenard Soha, took care of business at the No. 2 and 5 spots, respectively.

Krill battled from down a set to Minnesota's Vlad Lobak to come back and win his match at the No. 6 slot, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Wisconsin lost the doubles point for the first time all season. The Badgers move to 10-1 in team doubles on the year.  The No. 29-ranked pair, senior Osgar O'Hoisin and freshman Jared Pratt, earned another convincing win at the No. 1 spot. The pair beat Minnesota's Josip Krstanovic and Justyn Levyn,  6-3.

Westerman's Wing:
Head coach Danny Westerman
"Great match. That was probably the highest level we've played singles as a team all season. I was really, really pleased. It was the first time we haven't had the doubles point all year… To see our guys go out and feel like they could get six points on the board was great.

We played to win on the big points. Give Minnesota credit. They were able to close out in the big points. We got a lot better today. It was a good way to kick off the Big Ten opening weekend."

Up Next: Wisconsin has off play before heading to the Weset Coast, for a match against Pepperdine in California on March 20.
