Double Wins: Four Badger crews go undefeated on the day

The Badgers take four of six races over Iowa and five of seven races over Indiana

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The No. 11 Wisconsin women's rowing team had an all around great showing at the Big Ten Double Dual, topping both No. 13 Iowa and No. 20 Indiana on Saturday at Lake MacBride despite the head wind, gusts and rough water conditions.

Four Wisconsin crews—second varsity eight, varsity four, second varsity four, and the third varsity four—all went undefeated on the day leading the way for the Badgers.

In the morning, UW's second varsity eight (7:34.15) was down half a boat length to Iowa, but dug deep in the third 500 meters and walked away to reach open water and cross the line six seconds ahead of the Hawkeyes (7:40.2).

The UW crew (7:40.60) came back in the afternoon to edge out Indiana (7:42.5) by two seconds, grabbing its second win of the day.

Wisconsin's varsity four (7:34.15) got out early against Iowa and took another incredible move in the middle of the race to seal the deal, crossing the line nearly 19 seconds ahead of the Hawkeyes (7:40.2). The Badgers (8:03.22) came back in the second session to out pace Indiana (8:08.61), crossing the line five seconds ahead of the Hoosiers.

The Badgers' second varsity four (8:37.69) got out fast from the stake boats and were unstoppable in their morning race against Iowa (9:37.4). The boat (8:33.59) also took control in their afternoon race, finishing the 2,000-meter race just ahead of Indiana (8:39.1).

UW's third varsity four (8:43.3) held their early lead in the morning race, to beat both Minnesota (9:05.9) and Indiana (9:34.5) to the finish line. In the afternoon, the UW crew (9:26.89) continued to dominate, finishing nearly 30 seconds ahead of Indiana (9:54.9).

Both the novice eight and second novice eight raced for the first time ever for the Badgers and learned a lot through the process. The second novice eight (9:00.4) came in second to Minnesota (8:51.1), but ahead of Iowa (9:43.2) in the morning race. But, by the afternoon, the Badgers (8:37.09) came back to get the win over both teams. Minnesota finished with a time of 8:48.1 while Iowa clocked in at 9:11.6.

Wisconsin's varsity eight (7:18.49) couldn't hold on to Iowa's move at the 1,000-meter mark and would finish seven and a half seconds behind the Hawkeyes (7:11.00). But, the afternoon race would need a photo finish as the Badgers and the Hoosiers were bow ball to bow ball. Indiana (7:14.25) would ultimately edge out Wisconsin (7:15.13) in the end by only .88 seconds.

On the conditions

"It was a little bit of a challenge and we had to delay for a while due to the wind. It was fair and crappy for everybody. It started out as a dead head wind in the morning into a crosswind in the afternoon, which made for some long, slow races. But, it was some really good teams that came out here and raced."

On best performances
"The second novice eight raced for the first time ever and they had a really good learning experience at this regatta. They started out a bit nervous and shaky in their first race, but they did a much better job of executing what we have been working on to win that second race. It was a standout performance."

"All three of our fours raced really well and consistently, so that was good to see."

"The second varsity eight did a great job of doing some things well and maximized those things that were good and learned from the other stuff. They had two pretty good races."

"It was a good learning experience overall and I think the team performed really well overall. We are a strong team and we showed that today. We have some work to do and hopefully we get the chance to do it on the water, but if not, we will do what we always which is dig in and work hard and look forward to the next opportunity.
