MADISON, Wis. – The No. 47 Wisconsin women's tennis team had no easy task Sunday afternoon, matching up against No. 29 Northwestern, and attempting to bounce back from a setback on Friday against No. 34 Illinois.
But UW bounced back at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium on Sunday, securing a 4-3 win over the Wildcats, the program's first win against Northwestern since 1998.
The Badgers (15-4 overall, 7-2 Big Ten) jumped to an early 1-0 lead over Northwestern (11-9, 5-4) after winning the doubles point. From there on out it was pure drama.
Sophomore
MaryAnn Rompf secured the victory for the Badgers, winning her match on Court 5, 7-6, 7-6 with 8-6 tiebreakers in both sets, sparking a court storm from her teammates.
The Badgers won their second point behind sophomore
Anna Makarova, taking a 2-0 lead before sophomore
Lexi Keberle was defeated, making it 2-1.
Freshman
Ava Markham gave UW a 3-1 lead but not long after
Christina Zordani suffered a loss, making it 3-2 and putting all eyes on senior
Sara Castellano and Rompf.
With the triumph over Northwestern, UW has its most wins (15) and conference victories (7) in a season since the 2004-05 campaign.
Up next: Wisconsin is back in action against Iowa on Saturday, April 20. The match at Nielsen Tennis Stadium is set for 11 a.m. CT and admission is free.
