Perfect rowing conditions for race day against MSOE

MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin men's rowing team found success during their home opener by sweeping Milwaukee School of Engineering Saturday on Lake Mendota.

A sunny day on the lake and very little wind made for calm racing waters. The varsity eight A-boat and B-boat both outdistanced MSOE's top boat by over 40 seconds, finishing with times of 6:08.97 and 6:11.36. MSOE finished with their best time of the day across all five boats, finishing with. a time of 7:06.54.

Wisconsin's varsity eight B boats won by over two minutes with times of 6:24.97 and 6:28.79 for Wisconsin's largest margin of victory for the day.

The frosh four B-boat was able to outrace the A-boat and MSOE to take first place with a time of 7:05.94. The varsity four A boats won by the smallest margin of victory today, beating MSOE by just over 30 seconds. They finished with times of 7:03.45 and 7:05.94. The Varsity Four B boat C was able to cross the finish line ten seconds ahead of the D-boat and over a minute ahead of MSOE. They finished with times of 7:03.98 and 7:13.23.

Up Next: The Badgers will travel to Boston for racing against Syracuse and Boston University on Saturday, May 1 and Northeastern on Sunday, May 2.

Head Coach Chris Clark

"We try to do whatever we can to support the local programs. It's our guys, they need races as well. Each of these races there was one MSOE boat and two of ours which in many ways created bigger margins over MSOE unintentionally because our guys were trying to kill each other.

"It has not been determined yet who's going to the races next week so for them it's a way to prove they should go. We'll take three eights, which is 24 rowers, so this is kind of an audition. Terrific racing between our boats trying to knock each other off. The first eight run was almost dead even for 1500 meters which looked like an Olympic race how competitive it was.

"We weren't necessarily going to row everyone in this race. I thought, I kept trying to determine who should race, freshmen and sophomores for sure and then it just got too complicated to decide. I decided I was just going to race everybody and thankfully I did because they needed it, badly. You have to get out. No matter what you do in practice is ever going to be as intense as the race situation. You could tell by how gassed all these guys were. It really worked out well."
