Wisconsin hosts Badger Classic at Zimmer Championship course

MADISON, Wis. — The 14th-ranked Wisconsin men's cross country team kicks off the 2021 season by hosting the Badger Classic on Friday at the Zimmer Championship Course.The women's 6,000-meter race begins at 5 p.m. with the men's 8K race starting at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free.Â

1. BADGERS IN FULL SWING: Wisconsin will have its first full season in over a year since the initial COVID-19 pandemic. The Badger Classic marks the first of six races the men are set to compete in this fall, including the highly anticipated Nuttycombe Invitational which will be hosted at Zimmer.
2. B1G RETURNEES: This year's squad features a dominant group of Badgers including sophomore Rowen Ellenberg, who led Wisconsin to it's 51st Big Ten championship with his third-place finish in 2020. The remaining top-five runners from Big Tens are also set to return including first-team All-Big Ten honorees Jackson Sharp, and Charlie Wheeler as well as second-team honoree Bob Liking. Other top-returners include seniors Seth Hirsch, who led the Badgers at the 2020 NCAA Championship, and Shuaib Aljabaly as well as graduate student Olin Hacker.
3. TOP-TIER RANKINGS: Going into the 2021 season, Wisconsin's ranked third in the Great Lakes Regional and 14th in the USTFCCCA National Coaches Poll.
4. MICK AT THE HELM: Mick Byrne will be starting his 14th season as head coach of the program. Under his leadership, the Badgers begin their season quest for their 52nd Big Ten title and third consecutive conference title alongside their third NCAA team title.
5. UP NEXT: Following the Badger Classic, the men have three weeks of rest before traveling to Kentucky for the Greater Louisville Classic on Oct. 2.
