It was a historic day for the swimming and diving program as Wisconsin hosted its first-ever meet attended by fans in the Soderholm Family Aquatic Center. Wisconsin's women defeated Minnesota 170.0-130.0, but fell to Michigan 189.0-111.0 with Michigan also besting Minnesota, 179.0-121.0. The Badgers' men defeated Minnesota 148.0-143.0 but was bested by Michigan, 182.0-116.0, with Michigan also defeating Minnesota, 188.5-110.5.
Yigit Aslan started the day strong, breaking the previous pool record of 9:00.38 with a time of 8:59.35 in the 1000 Free. But that was just the start for the freshman from Turkey, he went on to break another school record in the 500 free with a mark of 4:21.06.
Sophomore
Phoebe Bacon headlined for the women, taking first place in the 200 IM (1:58.76) and second place in both the 100 back (53.67) and 200 back (1:55.68).
Junior,
Wes Jekel went first, second and third in his three individual events, the 100 back (47.43), 200 IM (1:48.57) and 200 back (1:45.84) respectively.
The diving team dazzled in front of the Badger crowd,
Tazman Abramowicz placed first in the 1M (351.60) and second in the 3M (356.90), while
Molly Hampton placed first on platform (208.20).
The Badgers also celebrated
Senior Day, honoring 17 seniors and the last impact they have made on the program.
STRAIGHT FROM THE POOL DECK:
Head Coach Yuri Suguiyama:
"That was a great way to start off our conference competition for second semester. Both teams are coming off of some pretty heavy training and for them to come up and perform the way they did today, was really good. We clearly have some work to do on both sides, as we start to sharpen up. Nothing is going to be easy from here on out, we're going to be facing some really stiff competition.
Our women had a really great first semester, and it was really nice to see some continue that momentum into this competition. The men were having to fill some spots and we asked some guys to step up to fill in for some other injured athletes. That was a really close meet with Minnesota, but that's good experience for them at this point in the season.
t was just nice to have fans in the stands. This was, after about a year and four months, the first competition in which we've had fans in the stands and another opponent. So that was a great thing. I think we're all really appreciative of having this right now having this facility and being able to host this. We're gonna be back here in a short period of time as we get ready for Big Tens and we're fired up to host here in Madison."
Diving Coach Yahya Radman:
"I think we did decently well today as a program. On the women's side we had a few highlights in a few things and need some adjusting. We're hoping to address some of that over the next few days before we head to Northwestern. Tazman had a very good competition still a few things we can clean up heading into the postseason, but what an environment to celebrate our seniors."
