Five Things to Know: Big Ten Match Play

Badgers tee off spring season in Florida
MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin men's golf is headed to Palm Coast, Florida to compete in the Big Ten Match Play on February 4-5.
Here are five things to know before the spring season gets underway:
1. Fall Rewind: Under new Wisconsin head coach Mike Wilson, during the fall season the team competed in four tournaments and averaged a 18-hole team score of 288.50. The team had two top-five finishes with the best being third place at the Rich Harvest Farms Intercollegiate. Sophomore Cameron Huss led the team, averaging 70.33 with nine rounds under par and standing 20-under-par through 12 rounds. Griffin Barela was close behind, averaging 70.42 at 19-under-par with seven rounds under par. The pair are both currently ranked in the Golfstat Top 100 with Huss at No. 71 and Barela at No. 77.
2. The Tournament: This will be the fifth Big Ten Match Play that the Badgers have competed in. Last season the team finished in fourth place after defeating Rutgers 4-1 in the first round and Purdue 3-2 in the second. Wisconsin fell 3-1-1 to Indiana in the third and then 4-1 to Michigan State in the final round. Coalter Smith won three of his four matches. There will be two rounds played each day, with the first round starting at 7 a.m. CST and the second round starting at Noon CST each day.
3. The Course: The Big Ten Match Play is held at Hammock Beach Dunes in Palm Coast, Florida. The resort features two courses — the Ocean Course was designed by Jack Nicklaus and the Conservatory Course was designed by Tom Watson. For the tournament, teams will be playing the Ocean Course, a 6,981-yard par-72.
4. The Field: Competing in the tournament is Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Penn State, Purdue, Rutgers and Wisconsin. In accordance with Golfstat rankings as of the end of the fall season, Wisconsin will be the six-seed and face 11-seed Maryland in the first match. Competing for Wisconsin will be Griffin Barela, Jacob Beckman, Cameron Huss, Robbie Morway and Coalter Smith, along with new Wisconsin transfer, Daniel Aas.
