Wisconsin sweeps first day in the Rockies

Badgers notch wins over Colorado State and Northern Colorado Friday

FORT COLLINS, Colorado -- The Wisconsin softball team notches two wins in its first day playing in the Rocky Mountains, notching a 7-3 win over Colorado State and beating Northern Colorado 5-4, in extras. The Badgers opened up the day in Fort Collins to take on the Rams of CSU before heading to Greenly, Colorado to take down the Grizzles of UNC.

In the first game of the day, the Badgers found themselves in a 3-0 hole after the first inning. The Badgers bounced back, scoring seven unanswered runs to spoil the Ram's home opener.

The Badger scoring started in the fourth inning as an Ellie Hubbard double scored Skylar Sirdashney from first who reached on a walk. The Badgers would notch one more in the fourth inning as Hubbard scored from third on a Jolie Fish fielders choice. Wisconsin, threatening the Rams even further, left three runners stranded as momentum started to build in favor of the Badgers.

The Badgers tied the game and took the lead in the fifth inning after Kayla Konwent reached base as the lead off hitter via hit-by-pitch. With Molly Schlosser coming in to pinch run for Konwent, the Badgers earned based loaded with a Sirdashney single and Hubbard walk. Peyton Bannon would earn the tying RBI with a sac fly to right field, scoring Schlosser while Sirdashney would come around to score on a Abby Herbst fielders choice on the next play. Wisconsin entered the bottom of the fifth with a 4-3 lead.

With Schwartz continuing to keep the door shut for the Badgers, Ally Miklesh added some insurance in the sixth. With the defense shifted to a five person infield, leaving right field open for the lefty slapper, Miklesh earned a hit off of a bunt down the third base line. A missed throw by the Rams put the ball past the CSU first baseman and into left field. The speedy Miklesh was able to wheel all the way around the bases to score, all on the same play.

Finally, Wisconsin sealed the win in the seventh with a two RBI double from Brooke Kuffel, finalizing the game at 7-3.

After Ava Justman got the start for Wisconsin, junior Tessa Magnanimo came in to finish the first inning with senior Maddie Schwartz taking over in the second and going the distance for the Badgers. Schwartz would hold the Rams scoreless through the rest of the game finishing with the win while only allowing four hits from Colorado State.

The Badgers found themselves in a hole in the second game on Friday as the Bears jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

UW trimmed the UNC lead to one in the second as Sirdashney scored on an error to make it a 2-1 game.

After giving up a run in the fourth inning, the Badgers tied the game up in the fifth as Kummer and Miklesh scored on a fielders choice to even the game up at 3-3.

The score remained deadlocked at three until the eighth inning when both teams scored to send the game into the ninth frame.

In the ninth inning, Konwent's RBI single proved to be the difference, scoring Kummer to lead UW to the triumph.

Schwartz earned her second win of the year, going five innings in relief while posting a pair of strikeouts.

Up Next: UW wraps up their time in the Rockies with two games on Saturday. The Badgers will face Colorado State at noon CT in Greeley, Colorado, before facing Northern Colorado at 4 p.m.
