MADISON, Wis. – A pair of former Wisconsin women's rowers will compete at the 2022 FISA World Rowing Championships in September with Maddie Wanamaker and Sophia Vitas accepting their spots on the 2022 U.S. Senior National Team.
Wanamaker, a 2020 Olympian in the women's four, will compete on her sixth U.S. national team, this time in the women's pair. She will race with Claire Collins.
Vitas makes her third national team, competing with the double sculls along with Kara Kohler.
The 2022 world championships run Sept. 18-25 in Racice, Czech Republic.
Both Wanamaker and Vitas accepted spots on the team after winning at the national selection regattas, then finishing in the top six at 2022 World Rowing Cup II in Poland in their respective events.
A Neenah, Wisconsin, native, Wanamaker placed seventh in the women's four at the 2020 Olympic Games in Toyko. Her international career also includes a gold medal at the 2018 World Rowing Championships in the women's four.
She was a 2017 second-team All-Big Ten pick and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, helping the Badgers to a pair of top-10 finishes at the NCAA rowing championships during her time at Wisconsin.
Wanamaker also rowed in the women's four at the 2019 World Rowing Championships, along with former Badger, Olympian and current lightweight assistant coach
Vicky Opitz, placing sixth and helping the U.S. earn an Olympic spot in the event.
A Franklin, Wisconsin, native, Vitas most recently competed at the 2019 World Championships in the women's quadruple sculls, aiding the boat to seventh place in Austria. That qualified the U.S. for a spot in the event at the 2020 Olympics.
She also placed fourth in the women's eight at the 2017 FISA World Rowing Championships in Sarasota-Bradenton, Florida.
Vitas is currently competing at the Royal Henley Regatta in the women's quadruple sculls.
As a Badger, Vitas helped the second varsity eight to 10th place at the 2016 NCAA championships, and the varsity eight to 13th place in the 2015 NCAAs.
