Box Score MADISON, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin men's tennis team had a very eventful Easter Sunday afternoon, defeating Indiana in their second outdoor match at Nielsen. The Badgers (11-7, 4-2 B1G) took down the Hoosiers (12-10, 1-4 B1G) 6-1.
For the second match in a row, doubles play was tough and drawn out. Jason Hildebrandt made his way back into the lineup after a couple of matches dealing with an injury. He and partner Jared Pratt struck first with a 6-3 win over Indiana's Luc Boulier and Sam Landau at No. 2 doubles.
On the other two courts, tiebreakers ensued. Robin Parts and Sebastian Vile performed the comeback of the season down 5-1 early on in their match. They won five straight games, holding off the Indiana duo of Luka Vukovic and Ekansh Kumar at No. 3 doubles. All tied up 6-6, Parts and Vile pulled off a 7-4 tiebreaker win to clinch the doubles point and put the Badgers on the board.
The team was all smiles up 1-0 after the doubles competition, but still had their game faces on.
After an exciting doubles win, Parts executed just the same in his singles match. He delivered a rapid two-set victory at No. 6 singles, defeating Kumar 7-5, 6-3 to put the Badgers up 2-0.
Pratt was next at No. 1 singles. After taking the first set handily 6-3, he faced a relentless opponent in Fletchall who tied it up 6-6, forcing a tiebreaker in the second. After going down early, Pratt rallied back and took the win with an 8-6 victory, putting the Badgers one point closer to the team win.
The Hoosiers were not an easy opponent though, with four singles matches making their way to the third set.
Senior Gabriel Huber's match was all tied up at one set apiece, when a fire seemed to light underneath him. After a 6-3 win in the first and a 4-6 loss in the second, Huber swept the final set, 6-0, to win his match and clinch the team victory. Huber's win ensured a perfect weekend for the Badgers at Nielsen.
Popovic redeemed himself after last Friday's singles loss, with an impressive three-set victory at No. 2 singles. After winning the first 6-1, he dropped the second 3-6, and rallied back to win the whole match. All tied up 5-5, Popovic won two straight games to add another point to Wisconsin's win.
For the second match in a row, freshman Michael Minasyan closed it out for the Badgers, being the last one on the court. He battled his way to the third set, making his comeback after dropping the first. With a 6-6 even score in the third, Minasyan dug deep and took the tiebreaker 7-5 to close out the day for Wisconsin.
Up Next: The Badgers travel for the last time during the regular season for a short trip to take on the Illinois Fighting Illini on April 14 and the Northwestern Wildcats on April 16.
