Day 1 of IRA National Championships shortened by lightning

Wisconsin set for a busy Saturday after weather postpones some racing

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Wisconsin men's rowing opened the 2023 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships Friday on Mercer Lake.

The varsity eight raced to third in its morning heat, one spot shy of advancing directly to the A/B semifinals, so got a second chance in the afternoon repechage. Needing to win the repechage heat to advance to the top 12, UW placed second behind Cornell and so will compete in the C/D semifinals on Saturday.

UW's second varsity rowed to a similar fate, though it took fourth in its morning heat, then placed second in its repechage heat in the afternoon. It will compete in a C/D semifinal on Saturday.

The third varsity eight placed fifth in its respective heat and would have raced in an afternoon repechage, but racing was postponed until tomorrow due to weather.

UW also raced a varsity four, which placed 25th in the morning time trial. The varsity four semifinals were also postponed due to lightning.

Updated race schedules for Saturday are to be determined.

Head Coach Chris Clark

"It was especially hot today but I think it was welcomed by us as the winter and spring are generally miserable.

"We started on a real positive note by finishing third in the 1V. That put us in prime position to make the A/B semi-racing for the top 12. Unfortunately, the way we've gone this year, it's one good race followed by bad. We were never really in it against Cornell who was the closest seed to us. That puts us in the C/D semi which means places 13-24.

"My own analysis put us in the middle zone overall for speed and while you always hope for more that looks to be where we are. I'm sure we'll get after it tomorrow.

"All the rest of our boats generally did as well as we expected if not wanted. As referenced before, we are not currently a deep team or are we particularly experienced winners. The ultimate race of the year is punishing in that it shows you just how hard you need to be to win at this level. All our guys are fully committed though and we will continue to push forward."
