MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women's track and field team kicked off the first day of competition at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational on Friday afternoon while throwers competed at the Red Hawk Opener in Ripon.
Day One in Iowa
Kiley Robbins got things started for the Badgers, finishing second in the women's 200 meters in 25.03 seconds. Taylor Gilling represented UW in the 200 meter premier race, finishing 10th in 26.03, both Robbins and Gilling will be back competing on Saturday in the 60 meters.
Ruby Madden and Katya Geyer competed alongside each other in the 600 meters premier competition, finishing eighth and ninth respectively. Madden crossed in 1:35.54, and Geyer followed in 1:38.54.
It once again was a loaded 3000 meter field for the Badgers. Zaira Malloy Salgado led the pack with a second-place finish with a personal best time of 9:46.29, she was followed by Annika Cutforth in 9:46.70. Madelaine Sweeney and Erinn Hill both ran personal best times in the event in 9:53.52 and 9:53.33 respectively, coming in fourth and fifth. Anna Schoesser followed the two coming in sixth with a personal best time of 9:59.58. Ashley Peterson and Myra Stray rounded out the Badgers finishing eighth and ninth in 10:10.10 and 10:11.27.
UW also had four athletes compete in the 3000 meter premier race as Bella Jacobsen led the group finishing second in 9:26.45. It was then back-to-back-to-back finishes by Alexa Westley, Kylie Finger, and Victoria Heiligenthal. Westley finished fourth in 9:27.37, Finger came in fifth in 9:27.93, and Heiligenthal sixth in 9:37.86.
Elissa Perkins was the lone Badger competing in the long jump, she cleared 18 feet, 1/2 inch (5.50m) for an eighth-place finish.
Trio of Pentathletes
The UW group of Shaina Zinter, Kyla Saleh, and Maddie Hogan competed in their first pentathlon of the season. Zinter led the group in the 60 hurdles with a third-place finish in 8.76 seconds. Saleh ran a personal best time of 9.23 earning a ninth-place showing and Hogan took 15th in 12.44.
Saleh bounced back and led the group in the shot put finishing fifth with a toss of 35-1 1/4 (10.70m). Zinter followed Saleh with a sixth place finish and a distance of 33-5 1/4 (10.19m). Hogan finished 11th with 28-11 3/4 (8.83m). In the high jump Saleh finished seventh clearing 5-3 3/4 (1.60m), while Zinter came in ninth at 5-1 3/4 (1.57m). Hogan rounded out the day for the group in the long jump, she finished ninth with a distance of 16-1 3/4 (4.92m).
Throwers win two at Red Hawk Opener
The Badgers started their meet off strong in Rpon, sweeping the podium in the weight throw. Junior Taylor Kesner competed unattached and won, throwing 71-0 1/2 (21.65m). Kesner smashed her previous best by more than six feet. Kesner was followed by Abby Peeler, throwing 67-1 1/2 (20.46m) for second place, and Chikere Oduocha in third at 65-07 ½ (20.00m). Danni Langseth and Asia Rave rounded out the top-five throwing for 65-1 1/2 (19.85m) and 63-3 1/4 (19.28m) respectively.
Freshman Zonica Lindeque claimed her first college win in the shot put, winning with a toss of 52-3 1/4 (15.93m), a new personal best. Danni Langseth finished second in the event with a distance of 51-5 (15.67m).
