Box Score UNIVERSITY PARK, Penn. – The Wisconsin men's tennis team took down a solid Penn State group Sunday afternoon. Penn State started strong, claiming the doubles point and an early lead. The Badgers saw singles wins at No. 2, No.4, No. 5, and No. 6 to complete the comeback match victory.Â
This win marks head coach Danny Westerman's 101st match victory across ten seasons with Wisconsin. He is just the 4th coach in Wisconsin men's tennis history to pass the century total.
The Badgers were well-matched in doubles play against the NIttany Lions. Penn State took the first match at No. 3 doubles with a 6-4 victory. At No. 1 doubles Tomas Zlatohlavek and Oliver Olsson came up just short, losing the tiebreak 2-7 and giving Penn State the 1-0 lead. Wisconsin's Michael Minasyan and Patrik Meszaros had the 5-4 lead at No. 2 doubles.
Freshman Edouard Aubert saw success in his move up to No. 4 singles on Sunday. He conquered Penn State's Reiya Hattori in straight sets, improving to 4-1 in Big Ten action this spring. Aubert's victory briefly tied the match at one-all, before Penn State took straight set victories at No. 1 and No. 3 singles. Patrik Meszaros out dueled Penn State's Marcus Schoeman in straight sets to give Wisconsin its second team point. The 6-3, 7-5 victory was Meszaros' first in the No. 2 singles slot.Â
Sarni Tennis Center's four courts created a high-pressure situation for the players in the No. 5 and No. 6 slots. Penn State held a 3-2 lead after the first four singles matches. Sophomore Matthew Fullerton rose to the occasion, quickly taking a straight set victory over Penn State's David Lindsay. With the team result on the line, freshman Sachiv Kumar dialed in and won his third set 6-2 to seal the Wisconsin victory.Â
Wisconsin is now 2-4 in Big Ten play and 8-6 overall.Â
Up Next: Wisconsin will host a pair of ranked opponents in No. 57 Indiana and No. 47 Purdue next weekend. The Badgers will take on the Hoosiers as part of a joint match day with the Wisconsin women's tennis team. First serve for this match is set for 4 p.m. on Friday, March 28.Â
