Badgers return to the road for Big Ten matchups
MADISON, Wis. - Wisconsin women's tennis continues Big Ten play this weekend as the Badgers travel to Indiana for a pair of conference matchups. Wisconsin will face Indiana on Saturday, March 14, before taking on Purdue on Sunday, March 15. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
1. The Last Time OutÂ
Wisconsin split its west coast weekend at Nielsen Tennis Stadium, highlighted by a historic 4-3 victory over No. 6 UCLA. The win marked the highest-ranked victory in program history for the Badgers. Wisconsin set the tone early in doubles, with the pairs of Tianna Rangan/Kaja Jacobson, along with Maria Sholokhova/Kaede Usui, earning wins to secure the opening point. The Badgers carried that momentum into singles play as Ekaterina Ivanova and Rangan each grabbed straight-set victories to put Wisconsin within reach of the upset. After dropping the first set, Kaede Usui battled back to claim the final two sets and clinch the historic win for the Badgers. Wisconsin returned to the court Sunday against No. 17 USC, where Maria Sholokhova delivered a strong performance at the top of the lineup with a straight set win, 6-3, 6-2, for the Badgers' lone point of the match.Â
2. Scouting the HoosiersÂ
Indiana enters the weekend with a 10-3 overall record, most recently sweeping Southern Indiana on Saturday. Earlier in the day, the Hoosiers dropped a close match to Purdue, but junior Elisabeth Dunac and senior Nicole Teodosescu picked up singles wins to help close the gap against the Boilermakers. Indiana will look to carry that momentum into the weekend as Big Ten play continues.
3. Scouting the BoilermakersÂ
Purdue enters the weekend with a 5-4 record and opened Big Ten play with a strong showing against Indiana on Saturday. After securing the doubles point, the Boilermakers picked up singles wins at the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 6 positions to close out the match. Purdue enters the weekend undefeated in conference play following the win over the Hoosiers.
4. Matchup by the NumbersÂ
Wisconsin holds the all time series edge over Purdue, 48-30, with the Badgers earning a 4-2 win in the matchup last season. Indiana leads the all time series against Wisconsin, 48-15, though the Badgers claimed a 4-1 victory over the Hoosiers last year. Wisconsin aims to add to the win column against both teams this weekend.
5. Up NextÂ
Wisconsin remains on the road next weekend as the Badgers travel east to face Maryland on Saturday, March 21 at 11 a.m., followed by a matchup against Rutgers on Sunday, March 22 at 11 a.m.
