MADISON, Wis. -
Laurie Nosbusch knocked in the game-winning goal at the 105th minute to lift Wisconsin to a 1-0 win over Iowa Sunday afternoon. The Badgers earned their first road win of the season to improve to 6-5-2 and 2-1-1 in the Big Ten.
After Krista Liskevych won a midfield battle, Leigh Williams evaded a defender cutting to the center of the field to fire a shot from about 25 yards out. Hawkeye goalkeeper Emily Moran made the initial high save but the ball took a bounce off the crossbar as Moran fell down. Nosbusch sprinted in to slip the rebound past Moran to give UW the 1-0 win in double overtime. The goal marked Nosbusch’s second game-winning goal and fourth of the season.
Wisconsin had control for most of the game, but had trouble finding the back of the net early. Throughout the first period Wisconsin had a number of long shots that landed inside the 18-yard box to give them multiple scoring opportunities, but the Badgers couldn’t finish. After the first half Wisconsin had seven shots to Iowa’s one.
The chances kept coming for Wisconsin as UW had six more shots in the second half. Nosbusch had a header off a corner kick that hit off Moran and turned into a scramble in front of the net. Eventually Moran came up with the ball to keep the game scoreless.
The UW defense stepped up, only allowing five shots while Michele Dalton made three saves in her third shutout win, including a save in the first overtime period. Moran finished with seven saves for Iowa as UW outshot the Hawkeyes 15-5. Nosbusch finished the game with a team-leading six shots, including five on net.
Wisconsin also had the upper hand with five corner kicks, Iowa had two.
The Badgers will take a short break before continuing Big Ten play at Illinois on Sunday, Oct. 11. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. against the Fighting Illini.
