Six members of Wisconsin women's openweight rowing program, and three from the Badgers' national championship-winning lightweight crew, have been named 2009 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association National Scholar Athletes.
Among the openweights recognized are seniors Maggie Galloway, Claire Geiger, Katie Helmrick and Kristin Johnson, as well as juniors Katie Hurtis and Ahna Olson. Making up the lightweight trio are seniors Lane Benes and Kelley Kowitz and sophomore Grace Tran.
To qualify to become a CRCA Scholar Athlete, rowers must have at least a 3.5 cummulative grade-point average, be in at least her second year of eligibility and race in at least 75 percent of the spring in an NCAA or IRA boat, or take part in a regional conference event.
