The University of Wisconsin women's soccer team dropped the first game of its weekend swing to the West Coast on Friday, falling to No. 12-ranked Santa Clara, 2-1, in the Badgers' first game at the Stanford Nike Invitational.

The Broncos started the game off strong, scoring both of their goals in the first half.

Lexi Orand put the first tally on the board in the 33rd minute off an assist from Maxine Goynes and Kiki Bosio. Three minutes later, Goynes added her own goal on a high shot from the right side with another assist from Bosio.

Santa Clara outshot Wisconsin, 9-3, in the first half.

The Badgers came out fighting in the second half, limiting Santa Clara five shots as they outshot the Broncos, 6-5. The defensive battle continued until the last minutes of play when Wisconsin scored in the 88th minute.

Whitney Owusu put up UW's goal with a low shot off a corner kick by Meghan Flannery. The goal was Owusu's first of the season.

Wisconsin goalkeeper Michele Dalton had an impressive night despite the loss, as she made seven saves against the Broncos.

Alev Kelter, Krista Liskevych, and Owusu had two shots each for Wisconsin, with Monica Lam-Feist and Laurie Nosbusch also adding shots.

The Badgers continue their play in the event Sunday, when they face host Stanford. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. Central.
