MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin women’s soccer team (6-3-3, 3-0-1 Big Ten) defeated Iowa, 2-0, at the McClimon Soccer Complex on Sunday to advance its unbeaten streak to nine games. The Badgers scored one goal off a header in each half to extend their shutout streak to eight games.

 Fast Facts
• The Badgers are riding a nine-game unbeaten streak
• Wisconsin has not given up a goal in eight games
• UW has outscored its opponents 3-0 in Big Ten Play

“I have to give these players a huge pat on the back,” Wisconsin head coach Paula Wilkins said. “It’s very difficult to go to Minnesota and play such a great team like Minnesota and then drive five hours back and turn around and play a game in two days against a team that has been resting for seven days. I thought our effort was even better in the second half, which makes me very happy with the team.”

The Cardinal and White took the 1-0 advantage over the Hawkeyes (7-3-2, 0-1-1 Big Ten) at the 13 minute mark of the contest. Freshman Catie Sessions (Woodbury, Minn.) took a free kick from the right side of the 18-yard box. Sessions found  junior Laurie Nosbusch (Mequon, Wis.) in front of the goal, and Nosbusch one-timed a header into the back of the net to record her fourth goal of the season. Sessions was credited with her second assist of her career.

“We practiced that set piece in practice a lot,” Nosbusch said. “And we were laughing because it was going so well (in practice) because Catie Sessions was serving great balls and we were finishing them all. We were laughing that we were going to get one in a game. Then we did. Catie served a great ball to the far post, and I was able to get it on my first hit and just head it into the back of the net.”

Wisconsin goalkeeper Michele Dalton (Mt. Prospect, Ill.), who is now riding a seven-game shutout streak, tallied three saves in the first half to keep the Hawkeyes scoreless.

In the 52nd minute, the Badgers sealed the two-goal lead with another header. This time freshman Kodee Williams (Toronto, Ontario) crossed the ball to sophomore Alev Kelter (Eagle River, Alaska). It was déjà vu for the Badgers as Kelter repeated Nosbusch’s first half goal with a one-timed header that found the back post.

The goal marked back-to-back header scores for Kelter, who also scored a game-winning header in UW’s 1-0 win over Minnesota on Thursday off a cross from Williams. Williams’ now has two assists on the season.

Dalton (6-2-2) secured the shutout with four saves in 90 minutes of play. The Badgers also added one team save.  Iowa goalkeeper Emily Moran recorded one stop for the Hawkeyes and now owns a 5-3-1 record overall.

Although the Hawkeyes outshot the Badgers, 10-7, Wisconsin is still pleased with its performance on both ends of the field.

“I still think we did a really good job (despite being outshot),” Dalton said. “That’s going to happen. Iowa obviously played really well. They had some good opportunities. They had some good offensive chances on goal. But our defense prevailed.”

Wisconsin’s two goals marks the Badgers’ second multi-goal win of the season. The last time the Badgers notched a two-goal win was against Tennessee on Sept. 17 when UW recorded a 2-0 victory over the Lady Vols.

The Badgers continue Big Ten Conference play at home against Illinois on Oct. 3 for the PAC the MAC double header. The UW women's team kicks off the double-header, hosting Illinois at noon before the Badger men host Michigan at 2:30 p.m. Kids receive free admission by wearing their youth team soccer jersey to the game.
