MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- After battling to a 2-2 draw in 110 minutes of play on Sunday, Marquette won the penalty kick shootout to end the Wisconsin women's soccer team's season in the second round of the 2010 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Tournament.

Although the game will go down in the record books as a tie for each team, with the shootout victory, Marquette received the nod to advance to the third round of the tournament.

"Penalty kicks is the worst way to lose," sophomore Monica Lam-Feist (Surrey, British Columbia) said. "We didn't think our season was going to end this soon, so we are not really adjusted to it yet."

Each team converted on four of their first five penalty kick attempts; however after each team was given a sixth attempt, Marquette bested the Badgers, 5-4, to advance to the next round.

"I had my hopes up a little bit with the first miss," Wisconsin head coach Paula Wilkins said. "Penalty kicks are a terrible animal. To win them feels amazing and to lose by them is very difficult."

In regulation play, Marquette took the lead with a header goal from Kerry McBride off a free kick by teammate Lauren Thut in the 10th minute, then maintained the 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

However, the Badgers were able to come back from the deficit to take the 2-1 lead from back-to-back goals by Lam-Feist in the 65th and 66th minutes.

Lam-Feist tied the game at 1-1, when she ripped a shot from 25 yards out at the 65:38 mark.

Just over a minute later, at the 66:46 mark, she sent a ball to the far post to give the Badgers the 2-1 advantage. Sophomore Lindsey Johnson (Sussex, Wis.) was credited with the assist.

The Badgers' lead did not last long, as it took the Golden Eagles just 40 seconds to tie the score at 2-2.

"I was disappointed that they came back and scored a goal right away," Wilkins said. "We talk about being sharp after those plays and I think we got into a habit of shutting teams out, so we just thought it was going to happen again. I give a huge credit to Moni (Monica Lam-Feist). She has been sick all week with a sore throat--even today. Again, a credit to Moni for fighting through."

Marquette's Katie Hishmeh sent the ball to Lisa Philbin who headed the ball into the Badgers' net to eventually send the game into penalty kicks after two overtime periods.

"Going into the second half we knew we were down a goal and we had to push for it," Lam-Feist said. "We got those two goals and we were excited and not concentrated so they scored right away."

Wisconsin's Lam-Feist, sophomore Alev Kelter (Eagle River, Alaska) and juniors Laurie Nosbusch (Mequon, Wis.) and Meghan Flannery (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) scored four-straight goals in the shootout.

Wisconsin redshirt junior goalkeeper Michele Dalton (Mt. Prospect, Ill.) slated three saves for Wisconsin and Natalie Kulla stopped six of the Badgers shots on goal for Marquette.

Wisconsin finished its season with a 11-4-5 overall record and 7-1-2 league mark to slate third place in the Big Ten Conference.
