MADISON, Wis. – The No. 14 Badgers earned wins in the varsity four and second varsity eight races as the women’s openweight rowing team opened competition at the Lake Natoma Invitational in Gold River, Calif., on Saturday.
The Badgers faced Texas and Stanford in each race of the morning session and took on Sacramento State and No. 13 Washington State in the afternoon races on the 2,000-meter course on Lake Natoma.
Wisconsin’s second varsity eight boat went undefeated in its two races. The Badgers clocked the fastest time among all nine second varsity eight boats in the morning session. UW finished in 6:31.50 to narrowly defeat Stanford (6:32.70) by 1.2 seconds. Texas finished third in 6:53.45.
The afternoon session saw the Wisconsin second varsity eight clock the second fastest time of all nine boats with a 6:51.50 to take first ahead of Washington State (6:59.98) and Sacramento State (7:21.80).
The UW varsity four also defeated Stanford and Texas in the morning session, clocking a 7:27.00 to defeat second-place Stanford by 7.8 seconds. Texas finished third in 7:43.60. In the afternoon varsity four race, Wisconsin took second to Washington State but finished ahead of Sacramento State.
In the varsity eight races, the Badgers picked up a pair of second-place finishes. Wisconsin’s varsity eight clocked a 6:35.26 to take second to Stanford (6:30.80) while edging Texas (6:49.70) in the morning races. The Badgers finished the afternoon race in 6:51.97 as Washington State won with a 6:50.60, and Sacramento State was third in 7:11.06.
The Lake Natoma Invitational concludes with Sunday’s morning session beginning at 10:20 a.m. CT. Wisconsin is slated to take on Tennessee and Louisville in all three races. Results will continue to be posted live on Twitter throughout the competition at http://twitter.com/NatomaInvite.
The scoring events for the Lake Natoma Invitational follow the NCAA regatta format and include the varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four. The Badgers are in fourth place with 29 points at the conclusion of Saturday’s races. No. 2 Cal leads with 36 points.
