MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 20 University of Wisconsin women's soccer team (0-1-0) fell to No. 3 UCLA (2-0-0) Friday, dropping its season-opener, 1-0, in front of 984 fans at the McClimon Complex.

The Bruins only capitalized on one of their nine shots-on-goal, but a secure connection off of a free kick proved to be the difference as UCLA picked up its second win of the season.

Jenna Richmond gave UCLA the game-winner in the 56th minute when she redirected a free kick by Lauren Barnes past Wisconsin goalkeeper Michele Dalton (Mt. Prospect, Ill.).

Despite several opportunities in front of the UCLA net, the Bruins outshot the Badgers 9-5 and Wisconsin was unable to come back from the deficit.

Result anything but a total loss
Paula Wilkins and her staff don't shy away from traditional powerhouses when they schedule, so it should come as no surprise to see her team take a similar tact on the field.

Story

With 2009 Big Ten All-Freshman honoree Paige Adams (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) and second team All-Big Ten honoree Laurie Nosbusch (Mequon, Wis.) sidelined due to injury, the Wisconsin offense turned up its tempo and played great possession, leaving Wisconsin head coach Paula Wilkins pleased with the team's performance.

"I am excited about that," Wilkins said. "We had a plan to clog up the midfield and we wanted to cause them problems. We had some injuries, two of our forwards were out, and so we had a little different game plan. The players did quite well."

With the absence of Adams and Nosbusch, freshman forward Kodee Williams (Toronto, Ontario) was inserted into the staring lineup and solidified her position on the team in her first collegiate game.

"I thought that (Kodee) did a great job of stripping UCLA a couple of times and putting pressure on the defense," Wilkins said. "This being our first real game, I am happy with where we are.

"There are obviously things that we can correct and obviously some things as a team that we need to work on to prepare us for Sunday."

The Badgers' attack pressured the Bruins early, outshooting UCLA 3-1 in the first half. In the 10th minute, sophomore Lindsey Johnson (Sussex, Wis.) launched in a flip throw from the left side, just outside the 18-yard box.

Fellow sophomore Alev Kelter (Eagle River, Alaska) went up to head the ball, but UCLA keeper Chante Sandiford grabbed it before Kelter could connect.

Sophomore Monica Lam-Feist (Surrey, B.C.) had Wisconsin's best scoring opportunity, when she ripped a point-blank shot from 10 yards out in the 28th minute. Sandiford deflected the ball near the left post for a save to prevent the Badgers from obtaining the lead.

Sandiford finished with two saves for the Bruins, while Dalton recorded three saves for the Badgers.

In the opening game of the Wisconsin Tournament, Northwestern and Cincinnati played to a scoreless tie after 110 minutes of action.

The tournament wraps up on Sunday. UCLA takes on Northwestern (1-0-1) at 11 a.m. before the Badgers face Cincinnati (2-0-1) at 2 p.m.
