MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 20 University of Wisconsin women's soccer team (0-2-0) fell to Cincinnati (3-0-1) in the final game of the Wisconsin Tournament on Sunday afternoon.

Despite outshooting the Bearcats 13-12 before 523 fans at the McClimon Complex, the Badgers were unable to find the back of the net. Cincinnati scored its lone goal at the 58:38 mark when Kelli Pawelko fired a direct free kick into the goal's upper left corner from the far right side of the field.

"I give credit to Cincinnati," Wisconsin head coach Paula Wilkins said. "They out-battled us on the field physically and I think we were coming off of a difficult game on Friday and emotionally, we just didn't rise to the challenge."

The first half saw back and forth action as both teams had ample scoring opportunities. The Bearcats held the advantage in shots, 6-3, after the first half, but the Badgers came back in the second half, and despite giving up one goal, outshot Cincinnati 10-6.

Nearly halfway through the second half, the Badgers had an opportunity to tally the equalizer when freshman Kodee Williams (Toronto, Ontario) broke through Cincinnati's defense with 28:30 remaining. She ripped a shot from 10 yards out, but Rachel Barnette dove on the ball to preserve the Bearcats' lead.

Minutes later, Williams had another opportunity to capitalize on her speed, but her shot was blocked by a Cincinnati defender and settled by Barnette, who finished with three saves.

Wisconsin's Joana Bielefeld helped the team rally in the final three minutes and fired one of the Badgers' best shots of the game. The Brookfield, Wis., native, wound up from nearly 30 yards out and hit the crossbar with 2:40 to go.

Badger goalkeeper Michele Dalton (Mt. Prospect) recorded six saves against the Bearcats for a total of nine saves on the season, combined with the three saves she notched in Wisconsin's 1-0 loss to No. 3 UCLA.

Although the Badgers dropped their first two games of the season by just one goal each, Wilkins hopes the team can work together this week to prepare for its road trip to Seattle, Wash., next weekend.

"I think that we need to get a collective team identity," Wilkins said. "I don't think that we have that right now. As this game went on, we started to panic a little bit instead of playing good soccer. I think that we need to have better movement with the ball and work better together as a collective group.

"I would have hoped at this point in our program, we would have been better prepared, but we just have to go back to the drawing board and make sure that we are prepared for Portland. This is going to be an important week of training for us."

Northwestern knocked off No. 3 UCLA 1-0 in Sunday's first game. The Wildcats outshot the Bruins 9-6, receiving the game's lone goal from Kate Allen at the 53:21 mark. Julie Sierks was credited with the assist.

The Badgers travel Seattle for the Husky Invitational next weekend. UW takes on No. 5 Portland on Sept. 3 at 6:30 p.m. CT before facing Washington on Sept. 5 at 3:30 p.m. CT.
