MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin women’s openweight rowing team took home three second-place finishes and a third-place finish at the Lake Natoma Invite on Sunday in Gold Hills, Calif.
After a second-place team finish on Saturday, Wisconsin advanced to the Group A finals, racing against California and Stanford in the first and second varsity eight and varsity four. The novice eight also advanced to their own grand final.
“It was a good weekend of racing across the board,” said head coach Bebe Bryans. “The novices looked great against tough competition and the varsity boats did a good job improving their racing skills.”
California took advantage of the comforts of their home course and closed the regatta by claiming first place in each race Sunday.
The first varsity eight was the closest race of the day, as less than five seconds separated the three teams. Wisconsin finished the 2000 meter course in 6:39.0, 3.5 seconds behind California and just 1.3 seconds ahead of Stanford. The Badgers’ finish was faster than both of their finishes Saturday.
After two second-place finishes Saturday, the second varsity eight finished third in 6:52.6, nearly 15 seconds behind California and 10.1 seconds behind Stanford. UW’s time was over seven seconds faster than Saturday afternoon’s race against Stanford and Tulsa.
UW continued to pressure the Golden Bears in the varsity four, but the Badgers fell short to California by 4.1 seconds. Wisconsin finished in 7:28.8, over three seconds faster than its two trips down the course Saturday.
The novice eight race was the closest race of the day, as the Badgers finished 1.9 seconds behind the Golden Bears. Wisconsin crossed the line in 6.46.9, 12.7 seconds faster than the heat race Saturday.
Wisconsin’s openweight rowing team does not compete next weekend as it prepares for a Border Battle regatta against conference-rival Minnesota in Minneapolis on April 29.
