MADISON, Wis.-- The No. 12 Wisconsin women's rowing team opened the 2012 season with a split at the Big Ten double dual against No. 7 Ohio State and No. 20 Indiana on Saturday in Bloomington, Ind.
UW began the day with six races against Ohio State. The Buckeyes claimed victories in both varsity eight races and both varsity four races, while the Badgers won the two novice eight events. In the afternoon races, Wisconsin rebounded for a sweep of Indiana, winning all six races.
"Up against tough competition we had one of our best performances at a double dual today," said head coach Bebe Bryans. "Typically we have had a rough season when beginning at the conference double dual. Today, however, was an outstanding beginning to our racing campaign."
The two varsity eights boats suffered defeats to Ohio State before rebounding to win both races against Indiana. In the first race of the day, the first varsity eight clocked in at 6:50.1, as the second varsity eight finished in 7:09.1. Against Indiana, the two boats finished in times of 6:45.2 and 6:47.1, respectively.
The two novice eights were the only boats to go undefeated on the day. Posting times of 7:13.2 and 7:14.5, respectively, the first and second novice eight boats cruised to easy victories over the Buckeyes. They followed up their wins over OSU with two more wins against Indiana, with the second novice eight winning by more than 37 seconds.
"The novice crews, in their first collegiate race, were brilliant and composed," Bryans said. "They raced like seasoned athletes, a testament to their confidence in both their training and their fierceness."
The varsity fours had the same story line as the varsity eights, dropping two against Ohio State and winning both against the Hoosiers. Both wins over Indiana were by more than 30 seconds.
Wisconsin will return to the water next weekend as they head out to Gold Hills, Calif., for the Lake Natoma Invitational.
