WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Wisconsin women’s soccer team has shown its stripes on the road this season, going unbeaten and allowing just six goals in five matches during its non-conference schedule.
The Badgers (6-1-1, 1-0-0) carried that same resilience and road mentality into West Lafeyette, Ind., where they earned a 3-1 win over Purdue in their Big Ten opener at Boilermaker Soccer Complex on Sunday.
“Any time you can get a win in the Big Ten, especially against a team like Purdue, it’s a pretty big accomplishment,” UW head coach Paula Wilkins said. “(Purdue) is very good and Rob (Klatte) always has them well organized and the same could be said this afternoon.
“So to be able to come in here and deal with their physicality and get three points on the road is great.”

Kinley McNicoll, Rose Lavelle and Kodee Williams, who tallied the game-winning goal, all scored for the Badgers.
With the match tied at 1-1, senior Alev Kelter looked to maneuver around two Purdue defenders and drew a foul to set up the piece. McNicoll set up 10 yards out from the left of the goal and three yards away from the boundary, sending the ball into a crowded box. Kelter was the first one to the ball, missing the header opportunity but Williams was there to send the ball into the back of the net for the game-winner.
“Alev’s run on the restart before the goal really moved some people and gave Kodee the opportunity to score,” Wilkins explained. “You have to give Kodee credit for getting the score, but without Alev’s effort that isn’t possible.”
McNicoll put the Badgers on the board first in the 31st minute, tallying a score on a misplay from Purdue’s defenders. As the Boilermakers tried to play the ball out from inside their own box, McNicoll intercepted the pass from three yards out and finished low near post for her fourth goal of the season.
Purdue (5-3-1, 0-1-0) answered in the 46th minute, as Alex Hairston finished far post for the equalizer.
Following Williams’ goal, Lavelle capped off the win just four minutes later by knifing her way through Purdue’s defense and netting her fourth goal of the season.
“I thought we played a stellar second half after (Purdue) scored its goal,” Wilkins added. “They were dangerous at times on some counter-attacks and it pulled us out of shape, which caused us some problems, but overall we kept the ball in our half of the field and played smart.”
“Cara (Walls) isn’t on the stat sheet today but her work and what she’s provided was invaluable for us today.”
The Badgers outshot Purdue, 17-16, and earned six corner kicks in the win.
Wisconsin continues its three-match road swing on Friday, when it travels to Ann Arbor, Mich., to take on 15th-ranked Michigan. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. CT.
