BEMIDJI, Minn. -- After a scoreless first period, the No. 2 Wisconsin women’s hockey team scored six goals in the final 40 minutes to dispatch Bemidji State, 6-0, Friday at the Sanford Center.
Three players tallied three points for the Badgers (18-3-2, 14-3-2-1 WCHA) in the victory, as sophomore Katy Harding and junior Brittany Ammerman each had two goals and an assist, while junior Blayre Turnbull tallied a goal and two assists. Sophomore Courtney Burke and junior Katy Josephs each collected two assists in the triumph.

“I’m happy for Katy Harding,” UW head coach Mark Johnson said. “She scored a couple of key goals in the second period and they were almost identical plays where she one-timed the puck and beat the goaltender. As more people get involved, it becomes difficult to defend. Blayre and Britt were able to capitalize on some situations, they had a nice 2-on-1 goal in the third period.
“Overall, it was a good team effort. When you get that many goals, it puts you in a good position to win the hockey game.”
Freshman netminder Ann-Renee Desbiens and sophomore Jorie Walters combined for the shutout as the Badgers picked up their eight shutout of the year. Desbiens played 50 minutes and saved 19 shots to improve to 10-1-0 on the season. Walters came into the game with the Badgers holding a 6-0 lead midway through the period and did not face a single BSU shot.
“Ann played very well,” Johnson said. “There were some situations, especially on their power plays, where they created some opportunities. She was able to control the rebounds and put us in a position to win the hockey game. We had an opportunity in the third period to let Jorie go out and play 10 minutes. She works hard, and it was exciting for her teammates to watch her play.”
After a scoreless first period, where the Badgers outshot the Beavers 11-6, junior Karley Sylvester put UW on the board, sneaking the puck past BSU goaltender Brittni Mowat to give UW a 1-0 lead at the 4:50 mark of the period. Wisconsin scored three goals in the final nine minutes of the period, as Ammerman gave UW a 2-0 advantage with just over eight minutes to play. Harding added one-timer goals at the 13:14 and 18:29 marks to give the Cardinal and White a 4-0 lead heading into intermission, despite being outshot in the period 11-8 by Bemidji State.
“The first goal was a nice goal by Karley," Johnson said. “It relaxed people a bit. I thought in the first period we created a few good opportunities and the Bemidji State goaltender made some good saves. We kept pressing, and I kept telling the team that if we were keep getting the pucks to the net, we will get some rebounds and we will be rewarded. We were rewarded in the second period and we took control of the game.”
Ammerman scored her 15th goal of the season four minutes into the third off of nice pass from Turnbull and Burke on a UW power play. Turnbull finished off the scoring for Wisconsin, going top shelf after receiving a precision pass from Ammerman. UW outshot BSU 16-2 in the final frame.
The Badgers finished the game 1-6 on the power play, while the Beavers went 0-3 with the man advantage.
UW and BSU meet again tomorrow in a 2 p.m. tilt to conclude the series.
