EVANSTON, Ill. -- On a day when Canada was celebrating its Thanksgiving holiday, the Badgers were counting the blessings of having Canadians Kinley McNicoll and Genevieve Richard on their side.
With goals from McNicoll and Cara Walls, backed by a career-high 10 saves from Richard, the No. 12 Wisconsin women's soccer team earned a 2-0 win over Northwestern at Lakeside Field on Sunday.
Walls scored in the 17th minute and gave the Badgers (12-2-1, 6-2-1 Big Ten) an early lead, then McNicoll tacked on another score in the 69th minute. Richard and the UW defense took care of the rest, closing out the team's 11th shutout of the season to clinch the road victory.
Fast Facts | Richard racks up a career-high 10 saves in net for UW | Badgers improve to 5-1-0 in true road games this season | McNicoll tallies three points on the day (goal, assist) | |
"First and foremost, this win is a huge credit to our team," UW head coach Paula Wilkins said. "They had to play four games in 10 days. Going against a team that had only had two games, this was a great effort from a lot of people.
"Even at the end when we were hanging on, it shows the resilience and finding a way to win. It's great to come out with a result here at Northwestern against a very dangerous team."
Thanks to a career day in net, Richard stymied the dangerous Wildcats (5-7-2, 1-5-1 Big Ten) and denied 20 shots, including 10 shots on goal, to secure her ninth shutout of the season and the 16th of her career.
Wisconsin improved to 6-1-0 away from home this season, including five shutouts in unfriendly confines. This year's group of Badgers also earned its fifth true road win, which is just one shy of last year's club that earned six true road wins and ranked fourth in school history.
Walls put the Badgers in front early and scored the game's first goal at the 16:53 mark, redirecting a corner kick that was taken by Kinley McNicoll past Lauren Clem for the score.
The ninth goal of the season for Walls, it would also go on to stand as the fifth game-winning goal of the season for the senior, which leads the Big Ten.
Already an assist to her name, McNicoll came through and scored a goal of her own in the 68th minute to extend Wisconsin's lead to 2-0. Her eighth goal of the season, the Oakville, Ontario, native scored on a free kick from 30 yards out, which ricocheted off players and in.
With three points on the day, McNicoll increased her team-leading point total to 23 on the season. She has tallied at least one point in nine of UW's 15 games.
The Badgers recorded just eight shots in the game, but five of them were shots on goal and two of them resulted in scores.
Wisconsin heads to Minneapolis next weekend for a match against border rival Minnesota on Oct. 18.
