BOSTON -- The Wisconsin women's rowing team competed at the 50th Head of the Charles in Boston on Saturday and took third in the club four on the first day of the two-day event.

UW's club four entry, which includes, junior coxswain Katherine Condon, and freshmen Marissa Gibson, Monica Gerber, Catherine Thompson and Lucy Chadderton, finished behind Fordham (18:19.19) and TBC Racing (18:45.23), who placed first and second, respectively.

The Badgers crossed the finish line with a time of 18:47.96--just over two seconds slower than the second-place boat.

"They just had a great row from start to finish," head coach Bebe Bryans stated. "Kate Condon, the coxswain, did a great job of navigating through a lot of traffic. They had a lot of boats to pass.

"They got a little caught up at the very end, but overall just a great performance. They are really happy about it and fired up. They are ready to just eat the world up. It was a great way to start the regatta for us.

"To put our top four freshmen in that boat and let them go at it was really fun. It was the first time we've ever done it. They got an automatic bid for us for next year, which was one of their goals -- to qualify the boat for next year's freshmen. We are fired up and ready to go for tomorrow. Hopefully we will have another beautiful day."

Wisconsin returns to the water on Sunday in the second day of Head of the Charles, with two boats competing in the championship eight.
