ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- Thanks to three first period goals, the No. 3 Wisconsin women’s hockey team skated to a 4-0 triumph against St. Cloud State on Friday at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
With the win, the Badgers (12-2-1, 10-2-1-0 WCHA) extended their road unbeaten streak to 21 games, the longest in program history. In addition, Wisconsin won its 21st straight game against St. Cloud State (5-7-1, 2-4-1-1 WCHA).
“I think we just prepare well during the week and everyone is able to get their school work done and focus on the games," senior Brittany Ammerman said. “We’ve had a lot of road contests this year so far, so I think it’s something we’ve gotten kind of used to and accustomed to."
Ammerman was one of four Badgers to light the lamp in the victory, as she tallied her team-leading ninth goal of the season in the first period. Fellow senior Karley Sylvester and freshman Annie Pankowski tallied first-period goals, while senior captain Blayre Turnbull capped off the Badgers’ scoring with a goal in the third period.
Sylvester put the Badgers on the board early in the first period, scoring three minutes into the game to give UW a 1-0 advantage. It marked Sylvester’s seventh goal of the season and her second power-play goal of the year.
Pankowski doubled the Badgers' lead just four minutes later, scoring a one-timer off Emily Clark’s beautiful pass. It marked Pankowski’s fifth goal in the past three games after scoring only two in her first 11 games at Wisconsin.
Ammerman tipped in Courtney Burke’s shot with just over seven minutes remaining in the period to cap off an impressive frame for the Badgers.
Wisconsin dominated the second period, outshooting the Huskies, 19-1, but couldn’t beat SCSU Julie Friend in the period. Wisconsin outshot St. Cloud State, 47-12, marking the 10th time this season UW has fired 40 or more shots on net.
In the third, Turnbull tallied her fifth goal of the year thanks to assists from Sylvester and Ammerman.
Friday’s contest marked the third-straight game that Ammerman, Sylvester and Turnbull played together on UW’s top-line. Since the shuffle, the senior trio has combined to score six goals and tally 14 assists.
“I think we have just all been playing together, through the power play, the past few years,” Ammerman said. “We’re obviously all seniors, so we’ve been able to develop chemistry and it’s nice to finally put that one together. I also think the other lines that got switched as well are working well, so it’s nice to have three or four lines that are clicking every single game.”
Sophomore netminder Ann-Renee Desbiens earned her third shutout of the year, stopping all 12 shots she faced.
The two teams meet in the series finale on Saturday in a 3 p.m. tilt.
