ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- One second.
That was the difference in a tightly-contested matchup between the No. 9/8 Wisconsin women's soccer team and Michigan on Sunday in Ann Arbor.
Ani Sarkisian scored a game-winner for the Wolverines (6-2-0, 2-0-0 Big Ten) with one second left on the game clock, preventing overtime and handing the Badgers (7-1-0, 1-1-0 Big Ten) their first loss of the season in a stunning 2-1 final at U-M Soccer Stadium.
"I told the team one game doesn't define a season," UW head coach Paula Wilkins said. "How we respond to this will be one of the most important things of our season. We have to take things away from this that we weren't prepared for today. Michigan did a great job and we didn't lock up at the end there.
"It's going to be a very good wake-up call for us if we can learn from this. I feel that there's always something we can pull out from a loss. We'll refocus, correct our mistakes and move forward."
Fast Facts | • Sarkisian scores twice, including game-winner with one second remaining in game | • McNicoll scores sixth goal of season on third penalty kick of the year | • Richard tallies season-high six saves | |
The Wolverines took the game's first lead and put the Badgers in an early hole in the ninth minute, after Sarkisian scored her first goal of the game off an assist from Nicky Waldeck.
An unfamiliar spot, it marked the first time all season the Badgers had trailed in a game. The score was also the first UW allowed in the first half this season.
Wisconsin showed adversity and came up with its response in the 36th minute. After Kodee Williams was taken down hard in the box by Michigan defender Bailey Haydock, the Badgers were awarded a penalty kick. Kinley McNicoll made the Wolverines pay, scoring her sixth goal of the season and improving to 3-for-3 on penalty kicks this year to tie the game at 1-1 before halftime.
The score marked the sixth goal in eight matches for the junior midfielder this season, which matched her goal total from all of last season through 19 matches. McNicoll leads the team this season with 18 points.
UW finished the day with a season-high 12 corner kicks on the day, with eight coming in the first half alone. The Badgers also outshot the Wolverines 13-11.
Genevieve Richard (7-1-0, 1-1-0 Big Ten) recorded a season-high six saves at goalkeeper for Wisconsin, while allowing two goals.
One of those two scores proved to be the the final dagger, as Sarkisian scored with one second left for her second goal of the game and fourth score this season to seal the Michigan victory.
With its first loss of the year, Wisconsin's undefeated start to the season came to an end. The Badgers' start of 7-0-0 tied for the best start in program history. UW began its 1987 season a perfect 10-0, but that stretch included a win over Minnesota's club team.
Wisconsin returns home from its four-game road trip to host Nebraska in Madison on Saturday, Sept. 20, for a 7 p.m. CT kickoff scheduled at the McClimon Complex.
