MADISON, Wis. --Â The No. 3 Wisconsin women's hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to Bemidji State on Saturday at LaBahn Arena.
Wisconsin had their chances, outshooting Bemidji State 41-30, but could not sneak a second goal past Bemidji State netminder Brittni Mowat, who made 40 saves for the Beavers in the win.
Fast Facts | • Friday marked the 15th time this season the Badgers went over the 40 shot mark | • Sarah Nurse tallied her ninth goal of the year | • Wisconsin killed all three of their penalties today, bringing their penalty kill to season mark of 68-71 (.958) | |
"We created some real good scoring opportunities, but their goaltender played well and made saves when she needed to," Wisconsin head coach
Mark Johnson said. "Our power plays probably have to be a little bit better to get some goals in there. It's about concentrating, focusing and bearing down when you get the puck in that scoring area.
"It seemed like no matter what we threw at them they had an answer for them tonight."
Both teams found the back of the net in the first period. Seven minutes into initial frame, Hanna Moher scored for the BSU to put the visitors up 1-0.
The Badgers responded, as sophomore
Sarah Nurse scored a beautiful breakaway goal with three minutes to go in the frame to knot the game at one.
Jenny Ryan and
Sydney McKibbon earned assists on Nurse's ninth goal of the season.
"Well Sarah (Nurse) took off and she scored a nice goal," Johnson said. "She probably could have had three goals there in the first period. She had a couple breakaways and overall that line of Nurse, McKibbon and (Baylee) Wellhausen played pretty well."
Wisconsin dominated the first frame, outshooting BSU 13-5.
Both teams were held scoreless in the second, but Bemidji State found the back midway through the final frame as Emma Terres scored her first goal of the season to put the Beavers up 2-1.
The Badgers had numerous chances in the period, generating 17 shots on net, but could not force overtime against the Beavers.
Ann-Renee Desbiens fell to 14-4-2 this year as the sophomore made 28 saves in the loss.
Wisconsin and Bemidji State meet again on Saturday at 3 p.m. at LaBahn Arena.
