KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- The ninth-ranked Wisconsin women's rowing team placed first in every one of its races at the Big Ten/Big 12 Challenge, Saturday on Wyandotte County Lake.

"It was a very strong day for our team effort," head coach Bebe Bryans said. "Every boat added to the success of the whole, which was our goal. This was a rehearsal for Big Tens, and if we're going to make a championship run, that's what will need to happen. Mission accomplished today."

In addition to the Badgers, Iowa, Kansas and Oklahoma competed in the races.

UW swept the varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four, third varsity four, novice eight and second novice eight races before sweeping all seven races in the afternoon.

Those results helped the Badgers take the team title with 142 points, while also helping the Big Ten claim a 254-117 victory over the Big 12.

"The morning conditions were perfect," Bryans said, "but the forecast for the P.M. was scary so we decided to compress the schedule and race everyone instead of sticking with the double dual format. It got pretty windy but stayed fine--good racing.

"It was the first time the Big Ten and Big 12 teams have had this challenge and it was really great to be a part of it. Great competition and great sportsmanship, which is what rowing is all about. Thanks to Kansas for putting this race together--the site was awesome."

Wisconsin rows next at Devil's Lake on May 2 in Baraboo, Wisconsin, as Michigan State and Minnesota visits the Badgers in their first race in the state's most popular state park.
