Indianapolis --- Top-three finishes in all but one race helped the Wisconsin women's rowing team to its fifth-consecutive third-place team result at the Big Ten championships on Sunday. Races at the two-day event were completed at Eagle Creek Park.
With the schedule in doubt because of the expectation of weather causing tough racing conditions, Sunday's racing was moved up two and half hours, while the race order was reversed, with the varsity eight going off first.
"The weather held off," Bryans explained. "It was threatening the whole time, but we had some pretty good water. Pretty stiff head wind so some slow races, but we got it done."
On this day, the Badger varsity eight placed fourth, while the second varsity eight and varsity four each took third place to power UW to its third-place team finish.
"It was a little bit of a disappointing regatta for us," head coach Bebe Bryans stated. "I think we performed really well in some races and didn't quite perform up to standards in a couple of the other ones.
"Overall, it was a really good team performance as we improved our standing from last year in the NCAA events."
Two-time defending NCAA champion Ohio State won the Big Ten team title for the third consecutive year, earning the conference's automatic bid and 186 points to win over Michigan (162 points). Wisconsin earned 140 points for its third-place result, while Indiana was fourth with 121 points.
With just the NCAA boats under consideration, the team results were the same, as OSU claimed 138 points, Michigan won 132 points, Wisconsin earned 99 points and Indiana was fourth with 96 points.
"Congratulations again to Ohio State, once again showing that they are absolutely the cream of the crop and our conference's leaders by far," Bryans stated.
In the varsity eight, top-ranked Ohio State edged Michigan by about a boat length in a time of 6:42.111. The Wolverines were second in 6:44.893. Indiana was also in the mix with a time of 6:46.101. The Badgers were fourth in a time of 6:55.221.
"The varsity eight just didn't race very well," Bryans remarked. "They are pretty upset about it. Being upset is one thing, doing something about it is another. That is what we are looking forward to having the opportunity to do."
The second varsity eight did one better, crossing the line in third place. Michigan, the surprise team of the day, won the event in 6:59.608, with Ohio State second in 7:02.290 and UW third in 7:04.290.
"I think the second varsity eight was pretty satisfied with their piece," Bryans said. "They were about the same spread off of Ohio State that they were when we raced them at the dual. We hope to make up a little ground there and so again that is what we are looking forward to, going forward."
In the final NCAA boat race, Ohio State crossed the 2000-meter mark first in 7:52.172, with Michigan second in 7:58.903 and UW third in 8:02.479. The Badgers entered as the top seed in the race.
In the remaining races, Wisconsin novice eight, second varsity four and third varsity four each took second place, while the second novice eight was third. Ohio State won all four of those events.
Senior captain Steph Malchine earned First-Team All-Big Ten honors, while fellow senior Kristine Kammers earned Second-Team All-Big Ten recognition. Senior Anne Rauschert was named UW's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award recipient.
Now Wisconsin waits for word on a possible at-large bid to the 22-team NCAA championships, which run May 29-31 in Gold River, California. The announcement of the entire field, including the 11 at-large bids, comes Tuesday, May 19 at 4 p.m. CT on NCAA.com.
"I think we were hoping for a little bit more competitive outing across the board," Bryans concluded. "With that being said, hopefully we will get another shot at it in the NCAA events. We'll have to wait until Tuesday to find out for sure. We are really hopeful and looking forward to that opportunity to get another go at it."
