Meeting Michigan
Michigan is looking to bounce back after a pair of losses last week to Northwestern and Illinois. UM was handed its first Big Ten loss of the season by Illinois, which snapped a seven-game win streak, which included five conference games. Both Illinois and Northwestern were the first teams to score first on Michigan all season and Illinois was the first team to shut out Michigan, 1-0. UM fell six spots in the NSCAA rankings, dropping from No. 19 to No. 25 following its two losses.
WINNING WOLVERINES
Michigan is undefeated in home matches, clinching a 7-0-1 record at home.
Michigan is fourth in the Big Ten while Wisconsin is tied for sixth in the conference.
Michigan had originally been first in the Big Ten before being upset by the Wildcats and the Illini.
Six of Michigan's games this season have been decided by one goal, with Michigan going 4-2-0 in those games. The Wolverines have gone to overtime twice and remain unbeaten in extra time at 1-0-1
YOU AND ME GOT A WHOLE LOT OF HISTORY
Wisconsin holds a slight edge in the all-time series with a 12-11-5 advantage. However, Michigan barely leads the all-time series in Ann Arbor, 5-4-3.
The last time the two teams saw each other, the Badgers came out victorious in Madison, furthering their 7-3-2 series lead for games in Madison.
Hands over her head in disbelief after the final horn had sounded, not even
McKenna Meuer could believe what the Badgers had just done.
In a remarkable turn of momentum and events, the Wisconsin women's soccer team scored three goals in just over 15 minutes to rally from a 2-0 deficit in the second half and defeat Michigan in a 3-2 final at the McClimon Complex.
Down a pair of goals nearly midway through the second half, Meuer scored one of her own that got a 3-0 run rolling and sparked the Badgers to an unforgettable rally. Fellow senior midfielder
Kinley McNicoll followed up with a goal in the 80th minute to tie the game up at 2-2. Then, it was senior forward
Nikki Greenhalgh who delivered the game-winner just minutes later and capped the comeback.
Sup with Sparty?
Michigan State is looking to snap a three-game losing streak this weekend when it hosts Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Similarly to Michigan, MSU fell to Northwestern and Illinois last weekend. The Spartans lost in overtime to Northwestern, 1-0, and to Illinois, 3-1. Michigan State is currently 2-5-0, and are 11th in the Big Ten standings with six points.
WE BOTH LIKE THE EXTRA TIME
The Spartans have played in six overtime games this season and has a winning record in those games, 3-2-1.
Wisconsin also has seen its fair share of overtime games this season, battling in six overtime games and holding a 1-0-5 record in those contests.
THE LAST TIME
Rose Lavelle ensured there would be smiles at the end of Senior Day.
With just over seven minutes left, Lavelle scored the game-winning goal to lift the Wisconsin women's soccer team past Michigan State in a 1-0 win at the McClimon Complex on Sunday afternoon.
The team's top two point scorers connected to produce the late game-winner with senior
McKenna Meuer supplying the assist and helping to ensure the five other senior Badgers had something to celebrate on Senior Day.
Not only was it a memorable win for the seniors, but the victory also helped the Badgers (10-4-3, 7-1-1 Big Ten) move into sole possession of first place in the Big Ten Conference standings and move one win closer to clinching the program's first regular-season title since 1996.
The win continued what has been a remarkable turnaround for the Badgers, who have won seven straight games to climb all the way to the top of the conference standings.
Wisconsin asserted its presence early in the game and didn't let up on the Spartans (7-4-4, 3-3-2), outshooting MSU by an 8-1 margin in the first half. Despite UW creating multiple chances, Michigan State held firm defensively and the Badgers were unable to find the back of the net going into half.
The Badgers were able to keep up their dominance in the second, peppering MSU goalkeeper Gabrielle Gauruder with 10 more shots over the course of the frame.
The work and consistent pressure finally paid off in the 83rd minute. After
Micaela Powers delivered a deep throw-in from the right sideline, Meuer was able to flick a pass across the box to Lavelle, who headed the ball in for her sixth goal of the year. The MAC Hermann Trophy candidate leads UW in points (15) and matched Meuer for the team lead in goals.
Seniors
Brianna Stelzer and
Molly Laufenberg led the Wisconsin defense in another strong outing, limiting the Spartans to only five shots, including just one on goal. UW goalkeeper
Caitlyn Clem and the Badgers' back line secured their seventh shutout in the last eight games.
