Wisconsin alum Caban earns first international cap with Puerto Rico

Caban and Puerto Rico faced the United States in a friendly on Sunday

MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin men's soccer alum David Caban earned his first international cap with the Puerto Rico national team over the weekend when Puerto Rico faced the United States in a friendly at Juan Ramón Loubriel Stadium in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, on Sunday afternoon.

While Puerto Rico fell 3-1 in the exhibition, Caban was substituted into the game in the 85th minute and earned his first international cap.

"To see David play for the Puerto Rican national team against the U.S. is something that he will never forget," Wisconsin head men's soccer coach John Trask said. "I know how excited David was for the opportunity. It looks like the coaching staff of Puerto Rico sees the same qualities in David that allowed him to have a very good career at Wisconsin.

"We are hoping this will be the first of many caps for David."

One of 21 players on the Puerto Rico roster, Caban played for Puerto Rico at the 2013 CONCACAF Under-20 Championship in Mexico. The Kenosha, Wisconsin, native was also on the radar of the United States national team system, playing in U-14, U-15, U-17 and U-18 events for the USA.

During his collegiate career at Wisconsin from 2011-14, Caban played in 75 games, starting 66 contests. He was part of UW's 2013 squad that made the program's first NCAA tournament appearance in nearly two decades. That year, Caban started 19 games and played the second-most minutes of any Badger.
