ROCKFORD, Ill. – Barely a month into their college careers, a host of novice Wisconsin women's rowers traveled to the Rock River and made their competitive rowing debuts at the Head of the Rock regatta. Racing took place on Sunday.
Racing in the women's collegiate novice eight, Wisconsin's lightweight entry wound up winning the 3.2-mile head race, clocking a time of 18:03.903 to win the day. However, UW's top novice openweight boat placed second in 19:11.488.
UW's other two novice openweight crews took fourth and eighth, respectively, among 15 entries.

"We tell our walk-ons at the very beginning of the year to look forward to racing in a month. They all think we are crazy. And here we are, a month later, with 45 women racing in five novice eights at the Head of the Rock in front of about 1,000 spectators on the shores of the Rock River. There were some recruits in there for guidance, but most of these women have a month of rowing under their belts.
"Kudos to the lightweight A boat for finishing the day on top - all five boats got a feel for what racing is all about and we look forward to taking on Minnesota at the end of the month."
