Wisconsin women’s rowers advance all four crews to Clemson Invite finals

Varsity four perfect on the day, varsity eight, second varsity eight knock off No. 10 Virginia

MADISON, Wis. – Racing alongside nine ranked rowing programs, the 11th-ranked Wisconsin women's rowing team advanced all four of its entries into A Finals on Sunday. Racing took place on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, South Carolina.

The Badgers began the day in heats with No. 10 Virginia, No. 18 Louisville, receiving votes UCLA and three other schools, and swept through their varsity races with wins in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four.

UW's novice eight, competing against both novice crews and third varsity eight against different foes, ended up second behind No. 5 Texas.

"It was a good morning of racing," head coach Bebe Bryans said. "It was a really solid outing for all four of our boats.

"All four boats found a rhythm and found a balance that they hadn't been able to find before, so we were really happy about that. It was a good coming together. I think we are on the right track."

In the afternoon, UW's group included the fifth-ranked Longhorns, as well as No. 19 Duke and the first team outside the top-20 in Gonzaga, among others.

Wisconsin got the better off all its opponents in the varsity four, but saw Texas get the better of the Badgers in the varsity eight and second varsity eight races, with UW taking second in each of the heats.

UW's novice eight also placed second in its Novice eight/third varsity eight heat, with only fourth-ranked Ohio State reaching the 2000-meter finish line faster than the UW.

"This afternoon's racing was another great outing for Wisconsin," Bryans said. "Texas is really fast and we were really pleased to be able to continue the path that we started on in the morning and do some really solid racing.

"In all our boats, we were able to cut the margins that we lost to Texas by a couple of weeks ago, so that was a good thing. In the four we were able to come out and reverse that finish order.

UW's varsity eight, its top boat, posted the second-fastest time of the morning and the fourth-fastest time in the afternoon heats. UW's varsity four, which was its lone perfect boat of the day, raced to the fastest fours time of the day in the morning, before posting the second-fastest time of the afternoon. UW's second varsity eight was among the top-four performers in the morning, and the top three in the second session.

Inclement weather is expected throughout the day, so Sunday racing action will begin at 6:30 a.m. CT (Watch online) with the varsity eight.

"Great racing for us today. It is a really great regatta. Hopefully thunderstorms aside, we'll be able to get another great day in tomorrow morning.
