No. 12 Wisconsin hopes to make a splash at Eastern Sprints
May 11, 2018 | Men's Rowing
Badgers seeded ninth in the varsity eight
MADISON, Wis. — It's been a long and winding road for the Wisconsin men's rowing team since it last brought home a conference title during the 2007-08 season. There have been ups, and there have been downs. But through the highs and the lows, hard work and determination have remained the cornerstones of the Badgers' historically spirited program.
The persistent resolve that has become a staple of the Wisconsin rowing program should continue to fuel the No. 12 Badgers when they travel to Worcester, Massachusetts, this weekend in search of their fourth Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges (EARC) championship varsity eight crown.
And after dropping a handful of close battles to formidable opponents like No. 6 Northeastern and No. 11 Boston University, this weekend will serve as a chance for the Badgers to prove just what kind of crew they are.
"They're all in," head coach Chris Clark said Tuesday. "There's no doubt. And that's such a powerful thing right there. It gives you a chance always, in everything."
Better known as the Eastern Sprints, the day-long conference regatta held at Lake Quinsigamond will feature 17 EARC crews and showcase some of the country's toughest competition in college rowing, including third-ranked Yale and No. 4 Brown.
Last year, the Badgers' varsity eight cracked the top-10 with a ninth-place finish, while the team placed seventh overall. Despite finishing three spots ahead of their previous 12th-place finish at the 2015 and 2016 Sprints, Wisconsin knows it has more in the tank.
With just under 30 days remaining in the season and the Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships looming ahead, Clark hopes the Badgers can take their race to the next level this weekend.
"If you have to be fast, you have to be fast now," Clark said. "We've been running in about third gear. We have five speed. We need to hit fourth and fifth. Let's hope we can do that."
Given the strength and tenacity of Wisconsin's momentous program, the Badgers should be up for the challenge.
"These guys are ready and willing, they just have to actually do it."
The 2018 Eastern Sprints are set to begin Sunday at 7:10 a.m. CT.
