SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Wisconsin recorded its lowest 54-hole score in program history, finishing the Puerto Rico Classic with an 839 (-25). The team also shot a new 36-hole score program-best with a 559 (-17) over the first two days of the tournament.
The team finished 11th in a strong field after shooting 280-279-280 over the three days in San Juan. All five Badgers finished at even-par or better.
The Badgers were led by
Griffin Barela and
Coalter Smith who both finished tied for 22nd with scores of 208 (-8).
Sunday, February 13
Wisconsin finished round one of the Puerto Rico Classic with an eight-under-par 280. All five players finished under par individually.Â
Cameron Huss led the Badgers, finishing with a three-under-par 69. This is his 10th round under par for the season and his sixth round in the 60s.
Barela and Smith both shot a two-under-par 70.
Daniel Aas and
Robbie Morway each shot a one-under-par 71.
As a team, the Badgers finished the day in 10th, ahead of Big Ten competitors Iowa, Maryland and Michigan State.
Monday, February 14
The Badgers dropped one stroke from round one to finish the second round with a 279 (-9) and move one spot up the leaderboard. The 36-hole team total of 559 (-17) is the lowest 36-hole score recorded in program history. The previous best was a 560 shot at the Fighting Irish Classic in 2018.
Smith was one of two Badgers to record the team's lowest score of the round with a 69 (-3), tying his career-best 36-hole score of 139 (-5).
Morway joined Smith to lead the team in the second round, shooting a 69 (-3) to record a new 18-hole career-low. The senior also recorded a new 36-hole career-low of 140 (-4).
Barela and Aas also finished under par, with 70 (-2) and 71 (-1), respectively.
Tuesday, February 15
The Badgers broke another school record in the final round of the Puerto Rico Classic, beating the program's previous best 54-hole score by two strokes with a 25-under-par 839. The low 54-hole team score before Tuesday was an 841 shot at the Fighting Irish Classic in October of 2018.
Barela had the team's lowest round on Tuesday, finishing with a four-under-par 68.
Huss and Smith joined Barela under par, both finishing with a three-under-par 69. Smith set a new 54-hole career-low with a 208 (-8), beating his previous best by five strokes. Huss finished the tournament in the top-50 with a five-under-par 211 to finish T44.
Morway tied his 54-hole career-low with a one-under-par 215 and Aas finished the tournament with an even-par 216.
On the individual side,
Jacob Beckman finished the tournament with a 54-hole career-low score of 225 (+9).
The Badgers will take a few weeks off from competition before heading to Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Georgia on March 18-20.
