Schwartz throws all 12 innings in doubleheader sweep over Utah

Wisconsin takes down the Utes iin both games thanks to high producing offense

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -- The Wisconsin softball team continued its winning ways in the state of Utah on Tuesday, sweeping a doubleheader against the Utes in Salt Lake City. The Badgers won both games against Utah, prevailing 4-3 in the first game and 9-1 in five innings in the second game.

Maddie Schwartz was dominant in the circle for the Badgers (14-7), pitching all 12 innings while allowing only three earned runs along with four strikeouts.

Ally Miklesh had four hits while Peyton Bannon had four RBIs during the sweep.

The first game of the afternoon boasted a low-scoring contest for both teams. The Badgers notched one run in the second off of a Morgan Kummer double followed by a Bannon sac fly to score Kummer. The Utes would tie the game in the third and the score would remain 1-1 all the way up until the sixth inning.

Senior Maddie Schwartz was the Badger putting in work in the circle, allowing only three hits in five innings of work. Utah put the pressure on the Badgers when they were able to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth.

With their backs against the wall, three outs away from a loss, Wisconsin produced the runs they needed to stay alive and more as three runs crossed the plate iin the top of the seventh to take the lead that would send them off to victory.

The seventh inning rally started with Big Ten Freshman of the Week Molly Schlosser reaching on an error and senior Lauren Foster drawing a pinch-hit walk. Then, veteran Kayla Konwent hit a single to the left side, scoring Schlosser to tie the game back up at 2-2. To cap thing off for Wisconsin,  Fiona Girardot cleared the bases with a triple, leading the Badgers to a 4-3 victory.

The Badgers returned to game two and made a statement from the beginning, scoring four runs in the first inning. Loading the bases with no outs after capitalizing on a rough start defensively from the Utes, Eden Dempsey — who pinch ran for Konwent — scored Wisconsin's first run on a passed ball. Later that at-bat, Bannon would get her second and third RBI's of the day my singling to right field scoring Ellie Hubbard and Girardot. Bannon would come around to score herself off of a Miklesh single to take a dominating first inning lead of 4-0.

Back in the heart of the order, Wisconsin tallied three more runs in the third thanks to a Hubbard triple that was the start of back-to-back-to-back Badger hits. Girardot and Bannon both singled scoring two runs, with Miklesh once again being the one to score Bannon on a single to left.

Putting the run rule into action, UW added two more runs on the board thanks to a Megan Donahue double that scored Girardot and Bannon once more.

Schwartz finished out the day in the mound throwing all five innings of game two only allowing five hits with two strikeouts.
