Badgers start season strong at SIRA Regatta

Wisconsin takes home top honors in two races at season opening competition
Oak Ridge, Tenn. - Wisconsin women's lightweight rowing earned top honors in two races at the SIRA Regatta to begin the Badgers' 2022 campaign.
Racing in an open event, coxswain Emma Collins, Falcon Jaacks, Alicia Le Bars, Claire Friedlander, Rianne Wagner, Camila Darvin, Claire Carlson, Evelyn Payne, and Darby Loveless finished four seconds ahead of Kansas State in the semifinals in the varsity eight competition.Â
The lightweight Badgers took second in the finals to K-State after crossing the line in 7:08.648. The Wildcats and UW were side-by-side over the first 1000 meters of the race, but Kansas State managed to pull ahead with a boat-length lead over the final half of the event.
The varsity four boat with coxswain Claire Willett, Eveline Enthoven, Tessa Cockerill, Morgan Gallagher and Grace DeNunzio opened the morning in the semifinals with a top finishing time of 7:45.505, six seconds ahead of Kansas State.
In the finals, the Badgers took second behind K-State despite a quicker time earlier in the morning. The boat crossed the final line in 7:47.602.
After a strong first day of competition, the women's lightweight varsity four boat had another solid performance in the finals. Coxswain Emma Collins, Helena Ikenberry, Victoria Moda, Darya Pronina, Sophia Stingl finished in first with a time of 8:14 - a 39 second advantage over runner-up, Clemson.
The novice four team won the finals competition after holding a boat-length lead over Kansas State for a majority of the race. In the last half, the Wildcats closed the gap, but it wasn't enough as the Badgers held on for the final strokes to finish the race within one second of K-State with a mark of 8:01.880.
